Day ten:
The main event!! Woke up at 4:45 and heading down to the race at 05:30. It was still dark outside. We got down to the seafront which was already buzzing with activity and spectators. We managed to get a spot on the beach across the bay from the start point however our view was hampered by a jetty, so I snuck along the seawall to get a better vantage point which was well worth it!
The pros got off around 6:30 followed by the 1800 other competitors at 7:00! 1800 athletes competing for the same piece of water!
When he had set off for the swim we headed for a Macy's breakfast which is one of their family traditions! The first guy completed the swim in 55 mins (glen took a couple of hours). We hung around to see his transition on to the bike and cheer on other competitors, afterwards we headed back to the villa for a rest as he had a 6 hour bike ride ahead! We went back to transition point for his run and saw him 4/5 times throughout his marathon which took him nearly 6 hours at half way thru the marathon he told us he was dying! We hung around until we could cheer him thru the finish line at 9:00. The winner completed it in 8h 15min (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride & 26.4 mile run)!
Unbelievable strength and determination, some of the guys especially the disabled were so inspirational. Very humbling and grounding experience! We managed to see glen after he had had fifteen minutes in medical tent.
We managed to call it a do around 23:30 and were all absolutely shattered so god only knows how glen was feeling!!
