Friday 22 June (Rothesay to Tarbert via the Kyles of Bute)
Rose early and was showered with birthday presents from Cath, and set off round the Kyles of Bute, arguably the jewel in the crown of Clyde sailing. The weather was kind to us most of the day, and we sped up the East Kyle at up to 6 knots under full sail, both of us enjoying getting properly into the swing of things, gybing our way nicely up the channel before the SW wind. The wind was as flukey as always around these hills and lochs, on this occasion dying completely as we negotiated the Burnt Islands at the meeting of the two tides, and then picking up again for a lovely close reach down the West Kyle. As we rounded the point into Loch Fyne we were no longer able to dodge the thunderstorms we had been watching over Bute, and we got a good drenching as we approached Tarbert.Once inside the deeply sheltered harbour we got a berth in prime position and explored the pretty little town, ending with a birthday dinner at the Victoria Hotel, bad enough to have us complain to the manager - very un-British! Anyway, it didn't spoil what had been a good day on the water for both of us, and a very Happy Birthday for Benj: thanks to all who sent greetings, by the way!
