Monday 25 June (Crinan to Craobh)
The morning forecast for the next few days was still fairly awful, but it looked like the only good window would be this morning. The other consideration was catching the correct tide through the Dorus Mor, another of the notorious passages with eddies, overfalls, and Spring currents of 6 knots or more, and this morning we would have the tide behind us, albeit still against the wind. So we made quick preparations and got out with the first sea lock opening at 0830, and sure enough rocked and rolled through the Dorus Mor at 7.5 knots! It was a bright morning, and the passage to Croabh Yacht Haven was a pleasant and short, arriving after noon. The wind was now gusting 29k inside the marina, and we were very glad of help from neighbours getting into the tight pontoon berth. Croabh (pron. 'Croove') consists only of the marina, a pretty village street with one shop, and the Lord of the Isles pub, where we had an excellent light lunch from their extensive menu. (Interestingly, both here and at the Crinan Hotel we were served by young S African girls, from PE and Pretoria, making their first trips overseas on a working holiday.) All that day and night the wind howled like a banshee through the rigging, with a counterpoint of clanking from a hundred badly frapped halyards, but we slept well nonetheless!
