So yes.. I was bad and didn't post anything while in Bamberg, but I had too many beers to try! So yeah, after the last post, I ended up switching rooms. The guy got even stranger, and I was unsure if I'd wake up in the morning.. so I said screw it! I'd rather live :) anyhoo!
The city of Bamberg is quite small, located about 45 minutes from Nürnberg. The city, having avoided bombing during the 20th century, maintains it's old, pristine beauty. So, why Bamberg? Bamberg, apart from its beauty, is know for its beer. Anyone surprised? Their particular claim to fame is their rauschbier, a beer in which the malts are actually smoked, giving an especially earthy smoked flavor (also kinda tastes like bacon).
My first evening in Bamberg, I decided to dive right in and try the most famous brewery in the city, Schenkerla. Before you sit down, the waitress asks the obligatory question, "Eins bier?" to which everyone responds, "da." I don't think anyone ever said no while in Bamberg. You don't consult the menu either, the waitress brings you THE beer. Yes, they offer a limited number of other choices, but when you ask for a beer.. you get THE beer. I loved the atmosphere. The Schenkerla is like the Hofbräuhauas in Munich (fame wise), but the locals actually go there. I actually never heard any English at the breweries in Bamberg, hooray!
I really enjoyed my time in Bamberg. A beautiful old town, the charm was always there. It wasn't overrun by tourists, or people selling random crap on the street, a nice change from some of the bigger cities I've experienced. Definitely a place I'd go back to!
