So... After we rushed our little bottoms off to get off the slow boat, on to a tuk tuk to check out of Laos, back on another boat to check into Thailand and to where we should get the connecting bus from, it turns out we needn't have bothered. The lovely people at the travel company we had booked our seats with had already sold then on!!!!!
We were told we wouldn't be going until the next morning to which we both politely disagreed with and argued for a good 15 minutes with the poor guy that had to break the news to us. I tagged out for a cigarette break and Matt tagged in and followed the guy inside, all I could hear was Matt trying to put in the simplest terms 'We have paid for 2 seats, the mini bus had 10 seats, you can sell 8 more tickets and 2 are for us. How you can sell something that someone has already bought?! We are unsure as well, but that's what happened. Despite Matt's basic explanation we were no closer to Chiang Mai and were still told we would have to go the following day. I then rejoined the action and it was clear we were stuck for the night. We wanted compensating as we had already booked our accommodation in Chiang Mai. My suggestion of "free night here?" was greeted by laugher from the Thai hotel worker (who had told us our seats were sold). My response "I'm glad you find it funny" was probably not received as it would be if we were in England but after persistence we managed to blag staying a free night at the hotel.
We were booked onto a bus the next morning, we emailed our Chiang Mai hostel (telling of the mix up), had some dinner and retired for bed. Although the stop over was not part of the plan it all worked out and we headed for Chiang Mai the next morning.
