went to Lamanai today. really enjoyed it, started with an hour long boat trip along the river, and the guide showing us all the local wildlife. He said that there are loads of crocadiles in this river so was very keen to see one. But alas all we saw were lots of 'logadiles', gutted. there were about 10 of us on the tour and the guide was great.
At Lamanai we saw all the temples that have been excavated so far. about 98% of the site is still unknown! the guide told us lots about the mayan cicilisations and how they lived and what they believed in. amazing. The mayans, predicted that the world is going to end in 2021 as thats when their 2 calenders meet.
In mayan culture you can only get to heaven if you help build temples or give something significant to the community, or to be given as a sacrifice. only the very lucky mayans were given as a sacrifice as it was a sure way to get into heaven. so if you won a ball game or were of a high standing then you were in! the less wealthy or athletically challenged had to wearn their right to heaven by working for the community by building the great temples.
we were able to climb the highest temple there (120ft) the view from the top was amazing, just jungle, jungle and jungle. to get to the top was quite a mission though, each step is about knee height and a rope to try and hoist yourself up. not the most fun in sweltering jungle humidity, but totally worth it.
in the tour i met a swiss called roberto and an indian - mustak, so went for tea with them in the eveing, went to a lovely place right on the river. and loving all the seafood i had shrip fajhitas. yum. spent the eveing drinking belikin (yummy local beer) and discusing politics in various countries. up early tomorrow to travel to San Ignacio x
