Sorry it's been a while since I last wrote on here. This is my first real chance after a pretty busy last week. New years in sydney....what can I say?! It was awesome! It was definately worth the 1 1/2 hours of queuing at 10:30am we did! We met up with Rosie and some of the girls she is travelling with and chilled out in the royal botanical gardens for the day. At 9pm they set some smaller family fireworks off over the opera house which were still pretty amazing and then a bit later on they lit up all the boats in the harbour which looked awesome. And then afetr lots of waiting, we managed to get such a great spot, probably one of the best sports, to watch the fireworks from. It was crazy because while we were waiting there I turned round and bumped into some people we had been diving with in Thailand-small world hey?!The fireworks were out of this world! I haven't seen anything like them! They lasted for about 12 minutes as well. You will have to take my word for the fact that the photos really don't do them justice. We all had such a great night!
After getting back about 5am and getting about 2 hours sleep, we had to check out of our hostel. While the others slummed in our hostel watching lots of TV, I met up with a friend from home who is working out here and another friend from home who is travelling. It was really great to see them all. We just chilled out in the botanical gardens for a bit. Later on, I met hannah and Hellie and we caught the overnight bus to Byron Bay.
We were planning to stay with Betty (an amazing lady my parents know from Nepal) in byron bay so she amazingly picked us up from the bus stop and took us back to hers which was about half an hour away from bryon bay. She also showed us a few of the lookout points along the coast on the way. She took us to a point where you could have one foot in new south wales and one foot in Queensland...crazy! We were all knackered after zero sleep on the bus so we crashed as soon as we got to hers. Unfortunately the weather on the couple of days after we arrived was shocking! It rained none stop with thunder and lightening! Apparently it is the worst floods since 1954! We weren't impressed! But it was kinda nice in a way as it meant we really had a chance to chill out and relax with all the nice home comforts. Betty was amazing and totally looked after us!She cooked us amazing meals as well as taking us out for a gorgeous chinese meal. She is such an amazing woman with so much energy...she had more energy than all three of us put together!
So those two days when the weather was rubbish we did a bit of shopping (Betty vowed never to take us shopping again after han and I were in one shop for 40mins!) and played lots of board games. On the one nice day we did get we went into Byron bay. Betty was so sweet because she drove us around everywhere. she took us to cape point, which is up on a hill with a lighthouse and has an amazing view across the ocean and you can see really far up the coast! We also walked down to the most easterly point in Australia where you can look across the ocean in the direction of New zealand, which was very cool! Steps lead us all the way down to the beach where lots of frisby was played! We had arranged to meet Betty here and then go and do some serious shopping in Bryon bay (the shopping is great in bryon apparently!) but unfortunately we both seemed to miss each other and so after two hours of waiting we walked back to the town to get in contact with her. During this time, poor Betty was driving around aimlessly trying to find us! When we eventuially got in contact with her, she was sat in the police station filing out a report for three lost 21 year olds! Bless her! It was needed fortunately though and she picked us up and took us home :).
The next day we were booked onto the 1pm bus, but all being pretty laid back (maybe a wee bit too laid back) we ended up leaving a bit too late, getting stuck in a trafic jam and missing our bus to surfers paradise-oops! It all worked out for the best though because we just caught the next one which gave us time to shop and have a drink in a cafe!
We all had such a great time in Bryon with Betty and it was sad leaving her.
