Have been in sydney now for two days longer than we were planning. (will explain that in a bit) and we have all fallen in love with the city! Its such a cool city with so much going on! We have also had a change in weather since melbourne with some sunshine at last! But I will try not to harper on about the temperature here too much as I know you are probably all reading this wearing ten layers with a duvet wrapped around you sipping a hot chocolate.
We felt pretty knackered when we arrived from Melbourne as we took the overnight bus which took 15 1/2 hours!! So we pretty much stumbled into our hostel that day and crashed out. But we did manage to get ourselves up for a Christmas spectacular show which they were doing at Hillsongs church (the biggest church in the world). However, despite putting all our efforts into getting a bus, then a train, and then another bus to get accross the city, as we didnt have any tickets, we got there to find out that it was too full and we ended up having to watch it on the TV!!We were so gutted! But it was pretty cool coz we were sat right next to where the stars of the show went on and off the stage so one minute you would see them in person and the next they would appear on the screen! It was a pretty awesome show despite it being on tele (it would have been amazing had we got in as we got a glimpse inside)...they had real sheep and dear in it!
Christmas eve...we were trying our hardest to get into the Christmassy mood but no matter how much we tried it wasn't really happening. But we had an awesome Christmas eve anyway. We spent it relaxing in the royal botanical gardens which are stunning and going to see the Opera house. The opera house is just as impressive as it looks in the pics and the view of the harbour bridge just behind was great! We are hoping to do the bridge climb when we get back to sydney just before we fly to new zealand. In the eveing, I went back to Hillsongs church for their Christmas eve carol service which I actually managed to get into! It was soo good...they had real camels for the nativity scene which was pretty impressive! Singing carols got me much more into the Christmas spirit.
Waking up on Christmas day was such a weird feeling....I had to keep telling myself 'it's Christmas'. But we tried to make it as much like Christmas as we could by buying each other presies (with a $4 budget on them!). Our hostel put on a Christmas BBQ on the rooftop too which was great. We got to eat kangaroo meat for the first time (it's really nice!) and they had crackers too which we were really pleased about! Everyone then headed down to Bondai beach to celebrate the rest of the day. It was pretty busy down there, full of backpackers, and there was lots of stuff going on. It felt so weird being on the beach for Christmas. You looked down the beach and all you could see were santa hats and reigndear ears! we were hoping to have a Christmas swim but unfortunately it was a wee bit cloudy so gave it a miss. We got to meet up with Rosie (friend from uni) on the beach which was awesome! So great to see her! That evening, we had to play some sort of board game to make it feel like Christmas so we played a big game of monopoly with other people from the hostel. Was pretty weird when I spoke to my family in the evening though as it when it was our boxing day and they were just about to tuck into their Christmas dinner!
I definately think I celebrated boxing day in style by making a trip to palm beach...the home & Away beach (for those of you know me know me well can probably imagine how excited I was to be there :)). It was such a nice beach and Han and I acted out Home & Away. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the stars as they were all off for Christmas but it was ace to be there anyway! In the eveing, we met rosie again to go up the sydney skytower. they werent going to let us in at first as it was too late but after some sweettalking we talked them into it. The view acrsoss the city at night was fantastic..you could see for miles.
The day after boxing day, Hellie and I made a trip to see the blue mountains. We got to see the famous three sister rocks there. The blue mountains are stunning and extend for miles! I could have stayed looking out at them for hours! We took the steepest railway down to the bottom of the valley which was more like an alton towers ride than a train, and then the cable car back up which was about 244m high! the view from it was beautiful! Another cable car type thing with a glass bottom floor then took us over the valley where we could look down and see right to the bottom and also passed the gorgeous katoomba waterfalls. After seeing the waterfalls we decided to walk from the viewpoint over to them and see them up close which was definately worth it! Although I wasnt wearing the most appropriate shoes for the muddy path so almost slipped over quite a few times! After a 'hard' day we thought we deserved a treat to popped into a chocolate cafe...which gave free chocolate tasters! I got a real hot chocolate there which they make by giving you a cup over a candle, milk and chocolate chips and then you just add them together and hey presto you have a REAL hot chocolate...it tasted amazing! Hellie and I kept going up for more free chocolate..Im sure they made a loss on us :).
We should now actually be in Bryon bay but because we had such problems with booking accomodation up the coast and amazingly got accomodation at our youth hostel over new years (everyone told us how jammy we have been as there is practically no accomodation left in sydney over new years) so chose to stay here over new years. Im really glad as I can't wait to see the fireworks! And it also gave us more time in Sydney so we took the ferry accross to manly beach yesterday. Its a stunning beach but as it was a saturday and school holidays you can imagine how busy it was. We barely could find a spot on the beach! We had such fun just chilling on the beach and playing in the waves! A very cool day!
I can't wait for the new years fireworks which are apparently phenomenal! We have been told to get there early but think it will be totally worth it! Will let you know! Happy New years everyone! Have a great one!!!
