Our bus was late picking us up to take us to the Cu Chi tunnels which allowed us to say our final good bye to our fellow intrepid friends who were carrying on up Vietnam and Laos. Was quite sad actually! Finally our bus arrived and we set off to the tunnels. Our guide was a real trickster so that made the bus ride entertaining. We watched a short film about the war and the our guide took us around the site. Amazing to see how they lived underground and to learn more about the war. Our guide lost family members during this time so he was really knowledgeable. Greg went down into a tiny hole which lead to a tunnel underground and popped up about 10m along. He said there were a few bats down there and very hot. He crawled on his hands and knees only just though. I wasn't so keen. We saw lots of b-52 bomb craters which were huge and were shown all the different traps they used to capture soldiers. There was one tunnel where they have modified it slightly for tourists. We all went through as a group - very hot and pitch black. Quite freaky. Mid afternoon we went back to Ho Chi Minh city where it started to pour. We have noticed around 3pm some days it's pours due to the high humidity. All the wee ladies on the road side get there umbrellas out and start selling ponchos by the dozen. We had dinner at the night market near out hotel for some delicious cheap food. The next morning we got picked up by bus to start our 2 day trip to Mekong delta. We bussed for around 1.5 hr to My Tho where our group boarded a wooden boat and went past a number of small islands. We arrived at a main island Ben Tre where we visited a coconut candy factory, had a horse and cart ride and enjoyed our free lunch which was extremely basic. We had free time for an hour so we wondered the island and walked over a bamboo bridge called a monkey bridge. They also had a crocodile farm and big fish ponds. In the afternoon we were taken to a honey bee farm to sample some honey and the chance to hold a 200kg snake. Ew. We enjoyed a row in a small boat around the canals and watched some Vietnamese traditional singing and dancing. We bussed further south to Can Tho where we all stayed the night. Greg and I enjoyed dinner picking and choosing small items from the local stalls. Some things we had no idea what we were eating but all seemed to taste good and we are still feeling fine which is good! 5.30am our hotel phone rung for our wake up call. We had French stick and eggs for breakfast before boarding a boat to go to the floating markets. As we saw it, it was like a wholesale market where the larger boats selling fruit and veges to the smaller boats who on sell in their local markets. Since we were a tourist boat several smaller boats selling items such as coke and coffee attacked us as soon as we were sighted. We got some pineapple and mango which were delicious. We then headed to a rice paper and noodle factory to see the locals in action. Very basic facilities but the noodles looked pretty good. The pattern we get on the rice paper is from the bamboo sheets which they dry the paper on under direct sunlight. We wondered around an orchard to see how the local fruit is grown and enjoyed a sample of several. Dragon fruit, papaya, pineapple, mango, grapefruit and on orangey fruit which the name escapes us which was gross!! We got the bus back to Ho Chi Minh city after lunch. Unfortunately we got stuck with the back seat so the long 5 hour bus ride was extremely bouncy. Quite painful even!! Around 6pm we arrived back to our hotel and we headed to the Rex Hotel for a drink. We sat upstairs in the garden bar and watched the motorbike madness below us!! There are no give way rules everyone just goes and toots. Very good free entertainment !! Although the drinks were hideously expensive. We found our first supermarket since being in Asia which was quite exciting. We had to lock our bags in a small locker outside before entering and the amount of security was crazy!! We went back to the same market restaurant for dinner and had a whole fish for $5nzd. So good. Tomorrow we are looking forward to our first sleep in for a while and a cruisy day before catching the 9hour sleeper bus to Nha Trang. More updates from there.
