We arrived at Phnom Penh around 1 pm after a 3 hour bus trip except the distance was only just over 100km. The road conditions weren't the greatest hence why it took us so long. At one stage it was so dusty the driver couldn't see a thing - bit scary. We checked in at the 'fancy guest hotel' and went to a local restaurant for lunch. For the afternoon we hired tuk tuks and visited the Khmer Rouge museum and the killing fields. We found it both interesting and devastating at the same time. We met one of the seven survivors and bought his book as a donation. That evening we all ate at a local food stall type restaurant. Some group members were a bit hesitant at first but we all enjoyed it in the end. No western foods all Cambodian. We had BBQ veil which was fantastic with pepper sauce. A lady selling bugs came around so we all chipped in and got a bag of grasshoppers and worms to all try. Only some were game including Greg and I. It definately helped that we had had a few beers earlier. They tasted like sardines and were extremely salty. The grasshopper legs were the hardest to get down. For dessert we headed to the blue pumpkin for ice cream. We all went to a bar for some amazing cheap cocktails which was really fun. About half the group and Borna went to a night club after for some dancing and ended up getting home just after 2 am. Very fun night though :). The next morning we met and had fried eggs and toast before catching the bus around lunchtime to go to our homestay village. Ours was called chambok about 4 hours drive from the capital. Our group was spilt between two huts which were beside each other. Multi share mattresses with Mosquito nets and open doors and windows for some natural air conditioning was were we slept. We were welcomed by some children who did some singing and dancing for us. We enjoyed a meal cooked by some women from the village and all had an early night. We were up at the crack of dawn thanks to the roasters and set off for a trek in the bush to see two waterfalls. The trek was roughly 3 hours and took us right up close to two massive waterfalls which is the main water resource of the village. On our return we were rewarded with delicious breads and omelettes cooked by the village women. We jumped back on the bus and headed for Sihanoukville which was about 4 hours away. We arrived at seaside hotel around lunch time. Unfortunately we had no water and power which flicked on and off while we were trying to shower after the homestay. We headed for lunch while they fixed it. As we left there was a huge thunder storm. Heavy rain, lightening and thunder. We all got soaked walking to lunch but enjoyed being under cover while watching it over the sea. It lasted for most of the afternoon. All the run off from the town came down to the beach. So the sea water was brown and full of rubbish. Quite disgusting. That evening we went back to the same place and enjoyed BBQ seafood and happy hour cocktails. Borna was the dj for the evening which was a laugh. On Thursday we got up early and met to go on a boat tour to some near by islands. We snorkelled and spent the afternoon at a private beach swimming and sunbathing. Our boat guide cooked us chicken and barracuda on the BBQ for lunch. Edward Kirsty Greg and I enjoyed some beers and snacks on the beach late afternoon before getting ready for our group dinner. We went to another place for more BBQ and 50 c beers. Back to Phnom Penh first thing tomorrow morning.
