Wow wow wow wow.
I swam with Dolphins today and had the most incredible time. I didn't expect to get as long with them as we did nor to be so hands on. We arrived at Cabo San Lucis (end of the Baja Peninsula) in Mexico and around lunchtime. A slightly ditzy tour guide seemed to have no clue where to go so we pretty much made our own way to the dolphin sanctuary once we had taken the tender boat from the ship to go ashore.
The weather here is soooooooooooooooo hot. 81 degrees F. I was not allowed to put on any sun creams either because it might contaminate the water with the dolphins in. Once inside the sanctuary it was suddenly very very organised. We were sorted into small groups of around 6 to -8 people and then taken to the dolphins. Dave was able to watch from quite close which was also brilliant. (no shade for him though!)
My group's dolphin was called Nacho and he is the alpha male of all the dolphins there. 18 years old and a real ladies man apparently lol. He was rescued by the sanctuary because he was an orphan and has spent most of his life there.
We learned some hand signals to communicate with Nacho:- (arms crossed over your chest means you want him to kiss you) and then we were allowed into the water in our small groups to meet the man himself. He was incredible looking....8 foot long at least and so strong looking. We had a chance to pet him and hug him and he *spoke* to us and, occasionally, splashed us then clapped his fins as though he was pleased with himself.
Giving him a kiss was just brilliant and I got some real nice photos. He kisses really gently on your cheek first then expects a kiss back. he would not leave me alone after he kissed me until I had planted at least 10 kisses back onto his mouth lol.
The ride on Nacho was just amazing. I held onto his Dorsal fin and he took me round the pool quite fast. His skin felt sleek and smooth but thick too...like a very slick wet leather. As he was taking me for a ride I could feel him undulating and powering forward. Was brilliant and I think I grinned from ear to ear for hours afterwards.
A truly once in a lifetime experience and I have the photos and video of the day to prove it.
I am still buzzing from the whole day....Dave really enjoyed watching to and little little even came along for some moral support. After my dolphin day, Dave and I wandered around the small town for an hour or so searching for a Mexican flag to join the other flags on our front room wall. Finally we found one! All the touristy shops there and no one had a flag it seemed. Dave also got a football shirt and I got a fisherman smock thing. I learned that I am quite a good haggler!!!
