Genoa - Closed!
We were in Genoa yesterday but, sadly, because it was a Sunday most of the town was closed for business. It was really dissapointing because it is such a pretty place to walk around. It would have been far nicer had it been bustling with people shopping or selling things! We all agreed that we liked the look of the place very much and enjoyed wandering the narrow streets.
Barbara and Gary went back to the ship a bit earlier than David and I because it was, again, really hot. David and I climbed hundreds of steps to take a look at the port from a higher vantage point. The fun times came when we discovered that, in order to get back down, we had to pick our way through really tiny cobbled streets which were so steep we were constantly trying to stop from sliding down them. Some of the alley ways we found on our way down looked as though they had not been walked on for many years!
There was one interesting but also slightly sad part to our day. The port of Genoa is where the Costa Concordia has her final resting place. We were able, from the front port side of the ship, to see her in the dismantling dock and what a sorry sight she was. It looked as though her front starboard side was caved in and she was covered in rust. I did take some pictures but I will only put one or two up because it is a little bit morbid.
As we left the dock we travelled even closer to her and, from our aft balconies, had the best view of what was left of the, once great, cruise ship. Sad....but also one of the real interesting parts of our day in Genoa.
Today we have been in Marseille! Oui Oui!!
