The thunder was rumbling again as we pulled into port today for our visit to Pisa. It took only around forty minutes by coach and then we were free to wander around at leisure. The tower itself is located in Miracle Square in the town of Pisa. I have seen lots of pictures of the leaning tower over the years but still, to see it for real was brilliant.
It is covered in white marble and, completely aside from the obvious lean, it is a stunning piece of architecture. There were lots of people posing for the usual "holding the tower up" photograph and so I decided that I would have a go. I don't usually go for this type of picture but it is a one off!The sun shone on us for around half an hour before the rumbling of thunder got louder and louder and the storm was over us once again.
Then came the rain.....and some! It was torrential and Gary, David and I refused point blank Barbara's insistence that we should get under cover or put on macs. We revelled in the rain, got soaked and laughed!
Okay so after an hour of solid torrential water it got a bit wearing but still.....a welcome break from the intense heat.Once back at port, David and I headed off into the town of Livorno for a few hours whilst Barbara and Gary went back to the ship for a rest and to get out of soaking wet clothes.
There was not much to see in Livorno, a nice square with some bars but, aside from that, the shops and the market were catered toward locals and not tourists.Typing this, the sun is back out and shining brightly. We should be setting sail in a couple of hours for Genoa. No tours booked tomorrow, just a day to explore at our leisure.
