Naples is a gem and the food is an absolute highlight. All these local pastries for a euro. And all the little pretty alleys!
The day started with a lovely lie-in giving us 12 well-earned hours sleep. We asked the friendly owner of the hotel for directions and advice for getting to Pompeii. it seemed so simple! 1 metro stop, platform 3 to sorrento, Pompeii was our stop and the entrance was directly outside the station. Yeah right!!
First we went to our metro stop and there was no-one to buy a ticket from (closed on Sundays). Walked to the next one and were met with a point blank no from a lady with no English. Even my hand gestures and basic Italian 'la navetta' didn't work - there was NO way to Pompeii. Thank God we didn't listen.
We walked back via the other metro station to see if it had opened. It hasn't. Back to the hostel to rethink... Only 1 minute from the hostel Lucy did a double take outside a coach. "Wasn't she English?" we had met our adoptive Grandma outiade a tour coach who kindly translated with the coach driver that of course there were trains.
We stormed to the station, bought our tickets and sat on the train to chill. After a faff we finally made it to Pompeii.
Our walking didn't end there. We did a HUGE loop before we realised that when we walked straight up the road out of the station we were in fact correct. Nonetheless we found the entrance and spent our afternoon looking at the ruins of Pompeii (our idea of walking up Mt. Vesuvius was abandoned as we had walked for longer and further than either of us can estimate!). We laughed as we jumped for the self-timer and listened to Pompeii in Pompeii.
We walked miles and feeling weak ate our gelato for the day before heading back to the station where a charming old man asked us where we were going and gave us cautionary words.
In the evening we went in search of Napolian Pizza. Found it, had starters a huge peroni and pizza, though much to our shock neither had tomato... You just don't think about pizza without tomato or pizza without cheese! A quick walk to the palazzo royale and the castle and a reassuring walk to the port.
