After the disaster of the bikes Lucy went to return them and Beanie went to find city sightseeing bus tickets. If the weather was going to be rubbish we wanted dry transport. Lucy is in so much pain with her ankles and Beanie's knees are niggling. (Mum if you are reading this please book me a sports massage. Being serious I don't want to injury anything any further when I marathon train.) PLUS we had to be at the Uffizi for 10 and didn't fancy a fast walk that early in the morning.
The Uffizi, oh the Uffizi. We had reserved our tickets online to save time. It definitely didn't. It took about an hour and a half at least. There was 3 random and disorganised queues. We were the youngest people by about 50 years and then we had to chuck away our trusty battered bottles as we went through airport style security to get through to see statue after statue after cherub after cherub. We tried taking pictures and were told off. We were shhed and then to get out we were herded through endless rooms in varying stages of construction, which were often painted a very beautiful raspberry colour enjoyed by both.
After escaping the Uffizi we stumbled upon the Duomo, which was very different to the Basilica for example and very striking. We admired from a cafe with some overpriced wine wine.
Back on the bus we headed up the hill. The weather turned out to be glorious and the walk in to the town minimal but both of us appreciated the bus up to the car park with a copy of David (Piazzale Michelangelo) with an incredible view over Florence. We took our time over a glass of over-priced prosecco and soaked it up all we could.
Time had gone so we took a longggg route back on the red line which went all the way up to the village of Lironto (?) with more beautiful views. Both quite tired, putting the headphones in, picking up little snipets about Florence and relaxing was just what we needed.
In amongst our wine we grabbed a verylateindeed lunch. Stupidly we went to the cafe we went to the day before. We avoided the lasagne but picked a slice of pizza, which they heated until it was ...Luke warm. Why didn't we learn from the first time?!
Planned to perfection, we walked via the Sante Croche to grab some pictures and past about a 30 lovely cocktail bars, to a bridge behind the famous one to watch the sunset. It was beautiful. A little walk further over the other side of the river and we had a beautiful meal too. The guy from the tour place had given us the recommendation and we're glad he did. The food was scrummy and we shared a bottle of white.
Florence is the first place where neither of us flinched about walking around at night. We both keep thinking about how to explain to people why they should come to Florence and we just can put our finger on the reason that makes it so lovely. Just visit.
