Saturday 23rd Feb
Got up 6am, not time for breakfast…Straight on the Awesome Adventures bus! Few pick ups on the way to the port before getting on the boat. Straight up to the observation deck ( in the pouring rain), the only people brave enough.
Hungarian guy on the boat opposite is obviously very impressed with our resolve and takes our picture. Bit of a shouty conversation between boats leads to our first random travelling friend J. Fifteen minutes up on the top deck and were beaten, drenched to the bone. We go back downstairs and become instantly famous as those guys/ those idiots. Also we were the only people to go up to the top deck at every island to take pictures…returning downstairs even wetter than before.Betts gets on the Tea while Gray and Casey gets in the 9am Beers. Casey begins to suffer from sea sickness but arrival comes just in time!
Arrive at Kuata in the pouring rain…briefly meeting Laura Kelly & Rachael Henderson before hiring snorkels and getting out into the gorgeous warm sea where the rain doesn't matter. Come back just in time for lunch; bit of a random meal but quite nice. Back to the dorm for a rest and get chatting to the girls. Loud Geordies/mackems who swear and burp a lot but really nice and a great laugh. After a good long chin wag we head back out into the sea (not before Casey has to get a new snorkel set to replace the one that he's lost - muppet). See a fluorescent blue starfish and we find Nemo. Gets a bit gloomy so we head back in, clean ourselves up and head to dinner. Meet John and Jenny, lovely couple, and chat about all the things they have done in Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. After dinner we are treated to a dance by the locals, which turns into a bit of a lapdance for Casey and Gray - from two 6ft Fijian giants. We're taught the Bula dance (Bula is the Fijian word for greeting) which is much like the Macarena only a lot lot better. Have a bit of a dance round, musical statues get involved before we settle into some drinking games with John, Jen and the girls. Highlight is during ring of fire when Gray slips into Dizzee Rascal mode for the Ryhme card - "Fix up look sharp". Starts getting a bit messy so we round things off; however the night is by no means over as we are invited to join the Fijian guys to drink lots of Kava. We scared off everyone else long ago with our loud, brash antics so it is just the 7 of us and 4 Fijians sitting around a big bowl of Kava drinking away to our hearts content. Bedtime comes at around at around 1am, though nobody is really sure, with everyone pretty hammered due to the Fijian beer, the Kava, or more likely a combination of the two.
Sunday 24th Feb
Still not quite on the correct time zone so despite last nights debauchery we all awoke between6 & 7 am. Russ was first to awake and tried to wake himself up with a beach run/circuits…failed miserably after extreme dehydration.
After breakfast we were due to be going for a church service and a visit to a local village on a neighboring island but the trip was unfortunately cancelled. The sun got his hat on so we took advantage and relaxed in a hammock on the beach for a couple of hours and chatted. Then Gray decided to hone his photography skills and started snapping the island. Before lunch we played volleyball..defeating Norwegian guy, Bernado the Brazilian and Jonny in a tight match.
After lunch we chatted for a couple of hours with Jen, Jonny, Laura, Rachael & Bernado before playing football with one of the4 kids on the island, Josh. Gray suffered from a toe splinter as a result! At 4pm it was time for Laura, Rachael & Bernado to leave the island so we saw them off with the Bula dance, laughter and cheers. Following this we headed inside as the flood gates opened once more. The new Swiss guys arrived and Russ got a massage off a local women which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Very chilled evening, eat dinner with the Swiss guys…although we didn't eat much as it was bone city! Betts retired for the night while Casey and gray chatted to jonny. The boys packed pre bed ready for the next stop on their tour!
