"One Forward!" is what Stoney, our rafting guide called out when we had to dig in our paddle blade to the mighty Pigeon River and pull to help maneuver our raft. In the heart of the Smoky Mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina flows the Pigeon River, but you need to know when it flows. The river, once polluted by a paper mill, is used primarily now for hydroelectric power and the new industry of white water rafting tourism. Certain days of the week, the water is released by a dam on the North Carolina side that creates class 3 and 4 rapids along this stretch of the river. We found this little gem by chance as it is right off route 40, our route west, and a perfect stopping point. Our guide Stoney is originally from Texas, but came here when he was 17 and fell in love with the Smokey Mountains and the white water rafting lifestyle. There is a tight knit culture of river guides who take advantage of the season to make money on the river. His dream is to winter in Costa Rica, taking his trade there where apparently English speaking guides are in demand. For three of us, this was our first white water rafting experience (Julie is an old pro) and we definitely will do it again. Check out the video if you like...you'll hear Stoney calling out "One forward," and "One more," and even CJ go overboard!
