How do you escape the 95 degree heat wave in the Shenandoah National Park? This is not a hypothetical riddle, but rather our real life dilemma as we pulled in this afternoon to camp. The answer is to go about 100ft underground in the nearby Luray Caverns where the temperature was almost 40 degrees cooler! It does make you wonder what people did before air conditioning. You can't live down there, as there is absolutely no sunlight and the acid in the water would make you sick, but it sure is a nice relief from the sweltering humid Virginia summer heat. Not only was the cooling down effect a big treat, but it was a visual spectacle with the way the stalactites and stalagmite formations were lit up. There was also a treat for the ears, as Luray Caverns boasts the Great Stalacpipe Organ...the only one of its kind! Check out the video if you want to hear it. After the tour we had to make camp, but the one we reserved at the park had no electric hookup, so we headed for Jellystone RV Park down the street. Roughing it in the trailer for the summer is one thing, but baking inside a hot fiberglass box on wheels is not a good idea! When you can't sleep in a cave, an air conditioned trailer is the next best thing. We might even see Yogi and Boo Boo.
