Since our first night of our big summer road trip we have not stayed in a parking lot. We did stay two nights parked on the street down the hill from Greg and Christina's place, but technically not a parking lot. So, we were due. We had a long drive from the Badlands to Sioux Falls, and except sleeping, we had nothing on our itinerary that night in the thriving southeastern metropolis. We sprinkled in a few unreserved nights on our way back home just to save some money, and last night was one of them. The big decision was whether to stay at Walmart or Cracker Barrel. We had to do a big shopping at Walmart because we were very low on food and supplies, but we also had to eat dinner after the six hour drive. Since we were all hungry by the time we arrived in Sioux Falls, we headed first for the Cracker Barrel. Dinner was unexpectedly satisfying and as we asked for the check we inquired about their policy for overnight camping in their lot. Our waitress checked with the manager and came back with the thumbs up, simply asking that we use the designated RV spots on the west side of the lot. That's where we already were parked, so after dinner, we leveled the trailer, put down the stabilizer jacks, and before getting ready for bed, headed to the Cold Stone Creamery in the strip mall across the parking lot from the Cracker Barrel for dessert. We slipped in right before they closed to get our late night treats, and then back across the parking lot to our tiny home for bed. It was close to 11pm before we turned off the lights, and only had the traffic leaving the late show at the cineplex on the other side of the parking lot to contend with. A few motorcyles revving and we were smooth sailing for the rest of the night. It was actually a pretty quiet night and we got a good sleep. I woke up about seven the next morning, and not wanting to wake Julie and the kids, crept out of the trailer and headed over to the porch of our friendly Cracker Barrel for a cup of coffee and charging of my phone and computer. We had no hookup in the parking lot, so the outlets behind the rocking chairs for sale on the restaurant's front porch did the job. I must say, it was kind of pleasant. Compared to the Walmart parking lot from Fishkill, NY, the Sioux Falls Cracker Barrel is almost like staying with family. CJ rolled out of the trailer first around eight-thirty and came over to join me while still in his pajamas. After a quick game of giant checkers on the porch, Julie and Anna came out and we all went in for a tasty breakfast. We did stop by the Walmart that morning to stock up, and upon seeing their parking lot, we knew we had made the right decision. So, if you are ever in Sioux Falls, SD, I can't tell you anything about the local attractions or sights to see. As far as I know, Sioux Falls refers to the landscaped water feature welcoming shoppers to the plaza we stayed in that night. What I can tell you is this: if you find yourself deciding between the Walmart parking lot or the Cracker Barrel parking lot for a place to spend the evening in your trailer, always go with the Cracker Barrel.
