For those of you who remember the mayor of Washington, DC in the late 80s, the title of this blog entry has an entirely different meaning, but this refers to some of the many tasty treats that can be found at the McKay Cottage Restaurant. No burying the Bend blog lead here, the highlight of our stay has been the morning breakfasts at McKay Cottage Restaurant. I know you may be thinking, "Jim and Pam (Julie's brother and sister-in-law) are the owners of McKay, so of course you have to talk it up," but no amount of nepotism could make those Lemon Ricotta Pancakes melt in your mouth the way they do, or satisfy the taste buds like the freshly poached eggs and homemade holandaise atop a golden brown Yukon potato hash. Mmm, I'm hungry again just writing about it. And then there are the variety of scones from peach to marionberry (I really didn't know it was a fruit). Nobody had room for dessert, even CJ couldn't finish his stack of pancakes, but fortunately we got to try the chocolate chip cookies and brownies later that evening when Pam brought them out to the park right across the street from their house where we played bocce and cornhole after bbq-ing on their wrap-around porch. Jim and Pam are the consummate hosts, both at the restaurant and at their home. While our reason for visiting Bend, Oregon was indeed to see Jim and Pam, this is quite the tourist destination for outdoor activities from skiing in the winter to kayaking in the summer. The Deschutes River runs through the middle of town, and floating down the calm, cool waters on a raft or tube is the thing to do on a hot summer day. We did it twice! There is white water rafting, hiking, a quaint downtown area, a variety of breweries, and oh, did I mention the McKay Cottage Restaurant?
