Sorry for the radio silence. Our three days in Yosemite was back to nature in many ways...one of them was no access to wi-fi or cell service. Crossing the barren desert of Death Valley and crossing the Tioga Pass into Yosemite National Park made it clear we were no longer in Kansas. Well, we actually never were in Kansas, that's just a classic movie reference, but we were truly a long way from our first night in the Walmart parking lot in Fishkill, NY. Walking out of our trailer door to see a Walmart was not in anyway visually appealing, but we knew we could buy anything we need just across the lot and there were no problems connecting to a cell tower. We had all the modern conveniences that modern society could sell us. But as we crossed the Tioga Pass, a landscape that reminds me of Frodo and Gandalf crossing the Misty Mountains on their way to Mordor, our connection to civilization was quickly severed as we could no longer get phone service. It was a bit of a hair-raising drive with the trailer trying to hug the s-turns climbing the cliffs up to ten thousand feet. The visual was as beautiful as the drive was gripping...white-knuckle gripping the steering wheel. It was here in Yosemite where we met up with Wease, Scott, Kyle and Megan. CJ and Anna were so excited to see their cousins, they couldn't sit still in the car seats as we drove down Evergreen Rd to the lodge they were staying at. While there was a lodge, in truth, they were staying in a tent. This was fun, because when the lodge bartender served us a long awaited beer and asked which room to charge it to, we told him to just "put it in on our tent." The next two days were spent exploring the natural beauty that Yosemite has to offer, from enormous granite rock formations to cascading waterfalls to towering sequoia trees and more. As we watched the kids climb the giant fallen trees and tunnel through their hollowed out trunks, scamper up the rocks to the pool at the base of Yosemite Falls, swim in crystal clear glacial lakes, and set up for the extra point kick of a football sized pine cone, we were reminded that kids don't need Netflix, cell phones, and video games for entertainment. They literally had fun just playing with sticks! Kyle and CJ have become budding photographers, worthy of National Geographic, as they poised themselves for just the right picture of the awesome views all around us. One view we were not expecting was passing through Cooks Meadow to see a view of the famous Half Dome, where we came upon a black bear in a tree eating apples. This was the first bear I had ever seen in the wild. We have heard about the bears as we were told to be mindful not to leave food out at our campsites, but had not seen one yet. It was a treat to see this one in its natural habitat, and not right outside our tent or trailer trying to get a midnight snack. Although nibbling on Anna would be a tasty morsel. Yosemite was a treat, and such a nice reminder that we should get outdoors more and appreciate nature. And while this particular national park might be three thousand miles away from our home, there are surely natural wonders all around us if we just put down our devices for a while and look around.
