Ace is our oasis! See what I did there. Say it out loud. I don't know what it is called in English, but in Spanish poetry it is called "calambur." It's like a play on words where you repeat two phrases that share the same sound but mean different things. Anyway, that is not the point. The point is that in our long trek across the nation in our rather small trailer, finding a day or two where we get out of the trailer is like finding an oasis in the desert. We were literally in the desert when we drove to Flagstaff to meet Ace, aka Oma, who drove up from Phoenix to meet us. She sprung for a hotel room for us in Flagstaff and what a luxury that was! Most importantly, though, we got to spend some time with family we had not seen in a long time. Had Ace not followed our blog beforehand, she would not have recognized the kids, as they have grown quite a bit in 4 years. Flagstaff is a nice relief from the desert heat, as it is up in the mountains with ponderosa pines, where the temperature was pleasant in the 70s and 80s. If I had to live in Arizona, it would probably be here in Flagstaff. Anna and CJ got to use the hotel pool and Julie got to use the laundry machines. Yup, it was time to wash clothes again. The last time was at our last oasis when we stopped at our friend Amy's house outside Nashville. That was another great break, as we escaped our trailer once again and had some yummy home cooking. We won't soon forget Amy's strawberry pie. Speaking of food, we were treated to a yummy beer and cheddar fondue at Beaver Street Brewery. And if you are in Flagstaff, don't miss the tacos al pastor at Bandera Craft Tacos. They have the most amazing horchata, too! Thanks Amy and Oma (alliteration?) for the well needed oasis along our journey!
