Our stay in Mexico would be a short one, so definitely a place saved for a visit in the future! The bus over the border from Belize should have been simple like most of the others but it proved to be a bit of a nightmare!
Much more expensive than expected, we also had to pay for the bus half in Belize and half in Mexico. Then to complicate matters we were given differing advice about costs so had no idea what money to change. Once we arrived in Mexico due to the confusion we were left with about £140 worth of Belize dollars, only then to find out that outside of Belize their money is basically worthless!! Nightmare, however luckily we found some backpackers in our hostel who were heading to Belize next and happily changed some up with us into Mexican Pesos!
Aside from the dramas our first stop was really nice on Isla Mujeres. Quick and cheap from Cancun by boat, the island was more touristy than those we went to in Belize and Honduras but it had a nice vibe about the place and it was nice to be on an island that felt quite lively like some of those off the southern Spanish coast.
The beaches were nice, hostel was really cool and the street food (first we'd experienced in Mexico) was really nice!
I was going to do some diving but decided against it in the end and just pottered around the island. Got some nice beach time on some of the quieter beaches around the island and had one night on the Sol's and tequila... When in Mexico after all!
It was a nice break from the mainland and good to chill as we got closer to our final few weeks of the trip.
The diving is quite basic and the reef good for beginners as it's quite shallow so I decided against it on this trip but there is a big underwater museum in the reef off the island which is still in its infancy in terms of coral but will be great in some years time. Another place on the list for the future. The island reef used to see around 750,000 divers each year but a recent hurricane nearly decimated the whole area so it's slowly beginning to build itself back up again now.
The island also proved to be the calm before the storm and the final weekend in Cancun before heading to Cuba!!
