Nice couple of days in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. We hadn't herd great things from people who had been to the city, just that there wasn't much going on but it turned out to be a great place.
Found a nice hostel, decent facilities and rooms and it was near the old town which was the nicest part of town. The first day we took a trip to the 'Middle of the Earth'. The equator runs through Ecuador and as Quito is the highest point along the whole equator, its classed as the middle of the earth on he 00o00'00 latitude line.
Along the line it's crazy to think with the space of a few feet you can step between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. On one side water goes down the plug clockwise and one side anti-clockwise, and if you let the water out on the equator line it just goes down straight! There were loads of other cool little tricks like balancing an egg on its base (easier as the gravity pulls the yoke directly downwards), a different sundial depending on the seasons and even the fact that on the equator everyone weighs 1kg less!
There were two places to see the equator line, the original and biggest ran by the government and then a site just next door with the newly discovered line as found by GPS!
The last day we did a walking tour around the city, visited the various famous churches, squares and buildings whilst learning all about the city along the way. Before taking a bus onto the final stop in Ecuador, Mindo, we finished off the previous nights curry!
At home it just seems like an everyday thing but when travelling South America finding a decent Indian curry is a rarity! Ranked 12 of over 800 restaurants on Tripadvisor, it didn't disappoint and was on par with most curry houses at home!!
Luckily as Ecuador is so much smaller than the other countries in South America it's a short journey to Mindo and then onto Colombia...
