Our Cambodia trip began in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, not quite a bustling as Bangkok but a big and hectic city day and night.
This stop would prove to be both fun, meeting friends and socialising in the local bars and club, but also educational and moving.
We visited both 'S-21' and the 'Killing Fields'. S-21 was the Khmer Rouge's most infamous prison. Based in an old school made it even more distressing, tales of torture and suffering were throughout, with a past surviver on the site as well. He was one of only 7 survivors out of nearly 20,000 prisoners.
The second day we visited the Killing fields. The infamous area where everyone from babies to grandparents were ruthlessly murdered during Pol Pots reign. What gave this even more impact was not only its relative recent time in history, around 40 years about but the way it affected the whole Nation with 1 in 4 (possibly more) of the population dying at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
During the rest of our stay we visited the local market and enjoyed a few big nights at our hostel... Mad Monkey, great place to stay.
Getting in at 5am and getting a bus to Koh Rong was interesting.... Back to an island was a nice change from being inland the past few weeks.
