On the 15th day of the fourth lunar month, Quang Ngai celebrates the Buddha's birthday with ceremonies and a parade of floats through the town. For the second year in a row we went with Hai - last year one of Owen's students, this year a graduate, now teaching in a primary school. She took us to enjoy a vegetarian meal then watch the parade from the main square.
Floats are contributed by communities all over the Province whose members come into the city for the occasion. Cafes and stalls sell traditional vegetarian dishes, crowds line the streets to watch the passing parade and some even follow along on their bikes. The weather has been particularly hot for a few weeks, and we've tended to hide indoors during the day, so it was nice to be out in the cool of the evening and enjoy the celebrations. It was all very colourful, noisy, chaotic - the photos don't do it justice.

Frank Fantastic Avenel,They certainly know how to celebrate with colour. And aren't Owen's students generous - informing you of the celebration and then taking you there.Take care.Frank
Rajni Madan Ahh......missed 'vegetarian' Vietnamese food...but I'm sure this must have been one of those times when you would have remembered me for my love for Vegetarian! Good to see you post finally after a long time.
avenel Rajni, often think of you and the good times in the funny apartment block in Lanzhou. Also when I came back from Australia with a microwave cake pan, tongs etc in my suitcase. And when I got my friend visiting from England (mentioned in last post) to bring me some Indian spices to make a change from the fish sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce combo :)
Zig The Vietnamese certainly have great celebrations - very festive with their decorations and food. Avenel, it must be lovely to be able to participate with the locals.
avenel Yes it surprised me a bit too Darryl
Darryl the Misery I thought that good Communists are supposed to be good atheists. What happened?
