Awake as usual not long after six, to be greeted shortly after by a spendidly received text - Sale 12 Bath 25! Allez Bath - at last, a win! This is the only news I will be seeking out from home while I am away. After the first peach I bought yesterday was not quite ripe, the second this morning was gorgeous, so high hopes for the third later! Out initially (0815) for a wander and a shop. Based on the temperature at this time it'll be a scorcher, the hottest since I arrived. The equivalent of an April day at home? Not quite.
Went with Lizzie first to an Internet place in a travel shop (half an hour online free) then onto Rusty's Market again. She was looking for an unusual fruit, which she couldn't find. We did get some snap bananas and a Buxicorn, which smelt a bit like peach but tasted rather sour and left a dark stain on your fingers. In fact it was disgusting and I couldn't bear it!
From there we went to the Cairns historical museum ($5 entry) which was a relatively small but very interesting place. It was brought to life by a gent called Cliff, a 'tour guide' who said 'If you've a free 20 minutes, I'll talk you round the place.' We took him up on his offer - and an hour and three quarters later we left! He really knew his stuff and took photos of us with crocodile heads, sharks mouths, fishes teeth and in a tiny plane! A really excellent way to spend a couple of hours and I learnt a lot about phones and fridges, planes and dentists! Also a lot about how the women used to take everything on while the man put his feet up. Petrol run irons, poison to kill cockroaches before they got into the furniture. He also showed us an instrument designed to help the throwing of spears. Cliff looked a little bit like Rolf Harris - an absolutely splendid afternoon, highly recommended.
Lunch: Noodles, peach (even tastier again!) and snap banana (too sweet).
The afternoon was laid back. I popped out to buy an Australian simcard, jumped on the net again briefly, then went for a swim in the lagoon for about half an hour - though I'd hardly call what I was doing swimming. Floating aimlessly with the odd muscle stretch would describe it better! With tomorrow nights accomodation sorted elsewhere - on the boat - I prepare my bag for leaving in the morning and book a bed for Monday night, before withdrawing some cash for the trip. I'll need $10 to hire a wetsuit and $70 as I am highly likely to do a proper scuba dive.
At 1900 head down for the free 'food' with Liz and a brother/sister from Brighton (Charlie/Annie), who are travelling for about a month, and Vicky, a friend of the pair. Quite jolly hour in the pub, free games going on to give away free beer. The irony of that was that behind the bar there was a list of shortfall of beer in the bar that the staff had to account for. Then, since I had little else to do, and they invited me, we went to the cinema to see Funny People. Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan (and, bizarrely James Taylor saying 'f*** Facebook!'). Fell asleep at the start and really struggled to stay awake at all. It was amusing, but too long, with no real plot to speak of. Swift walk back and to bed - early start tomorrow.
