Boxing day we headed for Gisborne on the East coast. This is where the sun rises first in the world on the new day. We are lucky with the weather as we hear reports of heavy rain and flooding in the south island. We sat and watched the sunset on boxing day and set our alarms for sunrise on 27th which was worth the early start.

27th was a beautiful day. We were lucky to get a motel for a couple of nights less than 100 metres from the sandy beach. Lucky as there is a music festival over the new year period and accomodation was not easy to come by. The day was a real scortcher. We spent it on the beach sunbathing then hired some wet suits and tried our hand at a bit of surfing ... well we had a go anyway.... oh and in the morning we went for a bit of a run. It was nice to just chill out on the beach for a day.
