Early start to get to Dunedin for lunch time (4 hour drive). Plan was to go on Elm tours trip to see the rare Yellow Eyed Penguins, Blue Penguins, seals, sealines and hopefully Albatros. Checked into YHA hostel which was apprently haunted. The weather was still not good with rain most of the time but it did clear up a bit for the tour but it was very overcast, indeed very foggy in places - we couldn't actually see the beach and sea we were actually driving just feet away from. The tour had been recommend to me but a Kiwi bus driver. They were the only company permitted onto the privately owned land where the penguins have chosen to nest. We had to do some steep hill climbing but it was well worth it. The Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguins are very private birds chosing to nest well apart from each other. They nest in the grassy hillside away from the beach. Quite bizaare to have penguins and sheep in the same picture! We were able to watch them for quite a while from the hides provided. Unfortunately as there was no wind the Albertros weren't flying so we could only view these via a webcam situated on one of their nests. We could have paid extra to go and see for ourself but as it turned out they were just all very still on the nest so glad we saved our money this time.
Got back to hostel about 10pm, a very long day. Treated Katie to home made dinner - cornflakes before settling down for night in haunted hostel. There were a few strange noises but we were so tired it was easy to sleep through.
Next day we needed to make our way to Christchurch - went via Cadbury World. Took a tour around the factory and got a few freebies.
