From capetown the journey continued in the back of a truck. an air conditioned safari truck that is. We had a good group consisting of three aussies, three dutch, two germans and our trusty south african guide. we travelled along the coast seeing whales at hermanus where they come into the harbour to calf. They came so close to the shore it was quite an amazing sight. Travelling down to cape agulhas the southern most point of the african continent we then camped the night on a farm near the De Hoop nature reserve. The next day we went to a remote spot on the coast where we saw around 30 whales just of the shore. A couple of them started breaching whilst others were sailing (fin in the air). This was such a remarkable sight even grant our guide was impressed.
It was then on to oudshoorn where we visited the cango caves. Almost everyone in the group elected to do the adventure cave tour over the standard tour. There was b*****-all air in that cave and we ventured two kilometres into it. There was some very tight squeezes such as the chimney and the letter box (a mere 25cm) I had to turn my head sideways to fit through and slid down head first into the next chamber. We later read on the brochure that this tour was for lean people only.
That night we went out to dinner at a russian restuarant. I took it easy on the grog because the next day was going to be a big one for me. I was going to ride an ostrich!! It might sound cruel but let me tell you those birds are strong. The ostrich is caught using a stick with a hook on it and then a bag is placed on it's head to pacify it. The bird is then led into a stall where you climb on and the bag is then taken off the ostrich's head. What happens next is a funny sight indeed. I think I lasted maybe five seconds before the ostrich threw me of the back (I told you they were strong), but nonetheless I had done it and could tick that one off the list.
