Capetown is definitely a pretty cool city. My old travelling friend Erika was good enough to put me up during my time here and she was an ideal local guide. Erika, I owe you big time.
Was really lucky to get a clear day on top of table mountain as nearly every other day I was there the table was covered by the tablecloth (cloud). One thing I hadn't anticipated was how cold it was up there, it was quite warm at the bottom but had a freezing wind at the top.
I went deep sea fishing one day and even managed to catch some supper. The better story is the one that got away however. I was sitting right up on the back of the boat with my feet up and was well into my 4th can of windhoek lager when I hooked a shark. It pulled on the line so hard I nearly ended up going for a swim. I fought it around the boat for about a minute before it got off. Oh well, that's golf! On the way back the wind had picked up and we were negotiating a five metre swell. The waves were higher than the boat and by the way the captain was gritting his teeth I knew it was exciting.
I also did a combat helicopter ride in a 68 model ex vietnam huey. This was loads of fun, flying low through the trees, over and around the sand dunes and over the surf. It was quite a thrill with your legs hanging over the side and nothing but a dodgy 1968 lap seatbelt holding you on.
Other highlights were cape point, false bay, die strandloper 10 course seafood lunch on the beach!, Bo Kaap, penguins at simons town and the baboons wanting to get in the car with us. Not to mention clifton beaches, camps bay and robben island. Erika's friends took us to a very lekker restuarant for my pre birthday party (i left on my birthday). There was a jazz band and dancing and I ate ostrich, crocodile and kudu. good times.
despite all the brick walls, barbed wire, electric fences, security gates and the fact that extreme poverty is never more than a few minutes away, I think that capetown people live a pretty cool lifestyle and one could definitely live here.
