From Oudtshoorn we ventured back towards the coast and spent a night near knynsna. I drank a lot of beer here so am having trouble remembering some of the details (what a waste). We went out on the lagoon in a boat and attempted to go out through the heads. On this day however it was to rough and the waves would have tipped our little speedboat over. The Brittish navy declared this harbour entrance the most trecherous in the world and it was easy to see why so many boats have been shipwrecked here.
From Knysna we continued to the Bloukrans river bridge home of the worlds highest bungy jump. Stuart and Meike were the only members of the group to take the plunge. Being a veteran of the bungy from queenstown NZ I decided to protect my injury prone back and watch from the sidelines. This wasn't easy to do as I really would have liked to add this to my list. The same day we also hiked the first section of the acclaimed otter trail. The sea was really rough with waves pounding the coastline so it was a bit of a challenge passing rocky sections that had waves breaking over them. It was a good walk however and the scenery did not dissapoint. The elusive knysna lourie did manage to elude us on this day however.
Heading on to Addo we stayed on a citrus property. This was kinda freaky for me as it looked so much like home. For the people that know Nangiloc and Colignan, this is what I'm talking about. There was a river running through the property with red gum trees growing on both sides and orange trees in the background. Gum trees were introduced during colonial days and now grow like weeds everywhere. The resemblance was amazing. I spent most of the first day sitting around the fire drinking beer overlooking the river. It felt like home and it was a nice afternoon for a beer or 12. The next day we went to the Addo national park for a game drive where we saw elephants, zebra, cape buffalo, warthogs, kudu and other antelope species among other things. Lions eluded us on this day but there were freshly killed carcasses so they were definitely close. The tight scrub made it difficuilt to see a lot of the animals.
Stay tuned for my next entry. It will be shocking and I'm not being humourous here. Not everything in South africa is pretty and what happened next really made me question where we all fit in this world. Total chaos.
