Up early to watch our first port of call which is Santa Marta. It looks like we may menthe only cruise ship in port today.
Our cabins service was late so we had to scramble to the Lido to get fueled up for our first adventure in South America. We are going to Tayrona National park.
The bus ride to the park was a 45 minute bus ride on roads that went from good pavement to pot holes to dirt to donkey track. The chances of getting seasick from the swaying bus were much greater than on the ship for sure.
The first wildlife that we saw were leaf cutter ants, about a million of them marching along a 6 inch wide road carrying huge loads going one directing and returning again for another load. They were all along the side of our path to the look out and beach about a kilometer away. Maxine glimpsed some red and black monkeys for a few seconds. I only saw a couple of domb birds and butterflies bot o
No photo ops.
The heat and humidity were intense and I was glad to get to the beach and jump into the water in order to cool off. The walk back to the bus got us heated up again but that just made us appreciate the AC.
The edge of the city's d the country side we drove through made Mexico look prosperous. Edwardo our guide says that the average workers wage here is $250 a month, a doctor $1500.
When we got back to the ship there was a market set up on the dock so I did some comparison shopping. Rolex watches started at $50 and were negotiable. The panama hat that I bought in Mexico can be had here for a third the cost even without dickering.
On board we had lunch and then hit the pool area on deck 8 where we spent most of the afternoon.
