Peru is cool. I mean temperature wise. It was in the seventies at mid day but quickly cooled off after three.
We took a quick tour around the city of Lima starting at the port of Callao which is politically separate but geographically right next door. There are 47 districts within Lima each with it's own Mayor. The city is very clean with lots of parks and flowers which is suprising in that they receive only a half inch of rain each year. The roads and sidewalks don't have ditches or gutters because they are not needed. Their water is all underground. They do get major fog banks from May to August.
Parts of the city have been restored but many neighborhoods are run down and kind of sketchy. The tour operator said to be very vigilant when in crowds and to stay in a group. A bit of overkill I think but I kept my hand on my camera all the time just incase.
Peru has more regulations than any place else we have been on this trip. We have an extra medical declaration card that we must carry when we are out and about. There are police and soldiers all over and most of them carry AK 47's. Most of them seem friendly enough but a few look like they are taking their job quite seriously.
Our bus took around the city with a couple of stops to tour the main square which is called Dos de Mayo or the Second of May. I don't know why. We visited two large Churches and went down in the catacombs of one. I took a lot of photos through the windows of our bus while we were moving so I am not sure how they will work out. We will get a better look on Tuesday when we take a shuttle into the main shopping area.
Back at the ship we took things easy and had dinner at Pinnicle Grill which is one of the two specialty restaurants on board which charge a priemium. It was OK but the baked Alaska cherries jubilee combination was to die for.
We have a big day planned tomorrow going to Caral which is a very ancient stone age ruins a couple of hours away so we are crashing early tonite.
