If it is Tuesday, it must be Guatamala. Today we took a hour and a half bus ride it a mountain to an old colonial city called Antigua. The bus was very slow and I thought the driver was just being cautious but soon found out different. At one point we started to pass an even less powerful semi going uphill on a two lane road, rightbeside a do not pass sign, on a blind corner to boot when a little tiny car decided it was time to pass both of us by driving on the shoulder of the on coming lane.
Erik and Sue were standing on the side of the road beside their broken downprivate rental van. They are adventurous travelers and usually don't make serious plans ahead of time and would rather take their chances with a taxi or minivan right off the dock. They say they usually get a interesting excursion off the beaten track but this time things didn't work out for them. They did manage to get back to the ship but we have't heard the story yet. I am sure we will though.
Antigua is an old colonial city with 38 Catholic churches of which only about 17 are being used, the rest being abandoned due to hurricanes and earthquakes. we hired a young man named Jarrison to show us around. There were many women selling bright cloths and other garments. Wooden carved masks a d jewelry were everywhere as well. I bought a carved flute to add to the collection of musical instruments I can't play, but the price was right. It seems that everyone speaks very good English. One young girl who couldn't interest Maxine in her wares said "Okay, maybe later then. You remember me, my name is Maria. You remember me later OK?". Well it was on our way back to the bus later that she spied Us and came over for another sales pitch. She said "You remember me, Maria the one from this morning, you buy now". They can be persistent.
