Key West day two. So it was an early morning and a walk down to the wharf to get the Yankee Freedom 2 to the Dry Tortugas. But alas, nature was not our friend. Captain decided not to sail due to gale force winds. A little dejected we headed back to Authors of Key West to catch up on a little sleep and blogging and decide what we were going to do. After catching up on the blog (and Siobhan catching up on a little sleep), Siobhan, Emma and I headed in to Duval Street to do a little sightseeing and get a little lunch. We had lunch at Willy T's. It was a very interesting bar. It had signed $1 bills everywhere you could possibly staple them. I looked very cool, and they had good cocktails to boot. Being a Sunday we had to eat slowly to get us to 12pm so we could have a drink (normally you can purchase alcohol from 9am but there is an old maritime law that prohibits alcohol on Sundays until 12pm). I had a very good pomegranate mohito. Then it was off to do a little sightseeing. First up was the lighthouse. 80 steps to the top and a very windy platform. So much so we were glad we didn't end up going snorkelling. The wind was blowing so hard you had to lean into it to walk forward on one side of the platform. But it was a great view. Next up the 'Southernmost Point'; which is really not the southernmost point. There were lots of people lining up for a photo. We then headed up the coast and walked all the public beaches. Although it was windy it was still really pretty. Lots of palm trees, white sand and blue water (you just had to ignore the chop). Siobhan and Emma dipped their toes into the Atlantic Ocean. I only dipped my hand (not wet feet for me thanks). We also stopped off at West Martello Fort which has been converted into a tropical garden around the ruins of the fort (which had in the past been used as navel target practise as the community thought it was very unsightly). The gardens were really beautiful and there were even some people having wedding pictures. They also had an 'autograph tree' which turned out to be a tree on which you could autograph the leaves. Yes, I did sign my name. Then we ambled back into town and met up with Tara for dinner and drinks. First stop Margaritaville, second stop Captain Tony's (which is apparently haunted by the ghost of Elvira who was hung in the tree which the bar is built around. The roof of Captain Tony's was also covered in signed bras. It had character and apparently very good punch (I had well and truley hit my alcohol consumption limit for the day after Margaritaville). And that was me and Siobhan done. Emma and Tara hit the Green Parrot which is supposed to be the best bar in town and a favourite with locals. They had a good time and apparently they are very generous with their alcohol pour. And that was the day. Had to get back to the B&B and get some sleep for the drive up to Miami.
The drive was surprisingly short and we got into Miami at 2pm. Had an adventure trying to find Miami Beach, but eventually wound up in the right place. Passed Star Island where all the famous people live. They had some very nice homes and boats. Had dinner along the Miami Beach Strip. Wow they had huge cocktails. Not quite as big as fishbowl cocktails but close enough. Very buzzed after that. Then it was a quick walk to the actual beach and a few photos and shenanigans. And now we are back in the hotel having an early night so we can make it to Tampa on time tomorrow for the hocky game!
