April's Travels
Hello,
We came to Belmopan on the Thursday and we were there for two nights. Belmopan is the official capital of Belize even though Belize city is much bigger and was the original capital on the coast. A big hurricane in 1961 wrecked Belize City and so the government upped and moved the capital right in to the mainland. It never caught on so Belmopan is small (the world's smallest capital) but it's much safer than Belize city and friendly. There are the facts covered for the day!!
We stayed here as a base to go cave tubing and see the zoo. It says not to bother staying in Belmopan because there's nothing there but it was great (well for two nights). We stayed in this little inn which was bizarre because it was in the middle of a residential area. Think American suburbs, films like Boys in the Hood.
On our first day there we hired a driver who took us to a collapsed cave full of crystal blue water inland which is the famous Blue hole. Then we went to Jaguar Paw to go cave tubing. I said this was an absolute no no. I hate caves and this was going to be the only thing i refused to do. However, Becky and the guide ignored me and before i know it i'm hiking through the jungle in a bikini carrying an inner tube. Half an hour later we get to the entrance to a cave, i get on the rubber tube abd brace myself, headtorch strapped to my head. The lovely guide forgot to mention what he calls the Belizean phirannas. Becky was complaining that these fish were biting her butt and i was thinking they're fine, they just keep bumping in to mine, until jaws emerged. Then the whole lot of them were swarming around me and munching on my bum like they'd never been fed. I spent the next ten minutes perched on my tube with as little flesh in the water as possible.
We floated through the cave which was actually really cool, although i didn't say much, just had eyes as wide as saucers the whole way. We turned our headtorches off at one point and it is so dark, like you've never experienced before. There were little fruit bats as well, lovely. After about half an hour we came out the other end and i was all in one piece hooray!! Of course i was greeted on the other side by my munching friends. I don't like those fish, at all. We floated down stream to where we started, it was great. Afterwards we had bar be qued chicken and salad and tried the popular drink, the panty ripper at a little lodge nearby. Coconut rum and pineapple juice with a kick, great stuff. I haven't looked back since.
The next day we went to the Belizean zoo and saw loads of really lush animals. Big cats, monkeys, parrots, otters, you name it they had it. The highlight was the national animal of Belize, the mountain cow. At the zoo her name was April. So hey guys, there's a mountain cow with the same name as me!!
Pics should be going on soon.
Becky mitch beware, i have just the one picture of a snake, i took it for you honey, sorry, i'm a bad friend!!
Lots of love.
