Wir last three days have been spent at Gagaju Bush Camp. It has been some experience... After getting the Greyhound from Brisbane to Noosa, we were picked up in Noosa by a minibus. The minibus took wis shopping afore taking wis to the camp. For the first time we had to make wir own food, for every meal for three whole days, so we've been living off pasta and bread and cereal. Some of the folk on the camp went a bit mad though and bought stuff like kangaroo steaks. When we did arrive at the camp it was pouring rain and thunder and lightning. Not the best camping sort of weather. Thankfully the first night we were in a dorm so at least had beds above the ground and a slightly more substantial roof over wir heads. It still wasn't a proper building though, more of a hut, so it was absolutely freezing! On Friday we had breakfast then a briefing about what was happening the next couple of days. The first thing was canoeing up the river. On the way there, the wind was against wis, the current was against wis, an me and Karis managed to be the only folk with two lasses in the canoe and one boy (the rest had two boys). We also ended up with the most useless boy, who was really no help whatsoever anyway. So the way there was pretty tough going. But anyway, we made it the 7 kilometres up to the lake then stopped a while and had wir denner, a drink at the pub, then sunbathed for a start. So that was nice. The way back was better. We stopped to paddle down a creek and found a rope swing and a good bit for swimming so stayed there a while then made wir way back leisurely to the camp. We made a bit of a raft with two of the other canoes and floated along quite happily most of the way back. When we got back though we were cold, soaking, covered in black greasy stuff fae the handles of he paddles and starving. But we showered and made a pizza and some pasta so that was fine. That night we all sat around the campfire, speaking to folk and drinking goon. (Goon is what every single traveller/backpacker drinks, it's basically 4 litre boxes of the leftovers from making wine. And it's the cheapest thing to buy by far!) There were actually lots of people at the camp, a few English, a couple of Dutch, one Scot and loads of German. There must have been around 40 people all together on any one night. A Danish guy took his guitar with him so we sang songs for a while around the fire. That was cool :) That night in the tent was absolutely freezing! Got next to no sleep. That made the second day of canoeing pretty tough. Thankfully it was a shorter trip this time but me, Karis and the useless man that canoed with wis the first day were still the only people who did the second day too... This time we went down the river to another lake where we stopped and walked to the beach. It was an absolutely massive beach, stretching as far as you could see both ways. Spent a while there. Wasn't so much fun for me because I was burnt fae the day afore and had to wear breeks and long sleeves so ended up just aboot dying of heat. On the way back the man that was we wis had left early so me and Karis ended up in a 3 person canoe by wirselves... We wirna actually much worse aff though. But we were still last. So we some pretty impressive acrobatics in the middle of the river we managed to swap canoes so that we got a German boy each. That was much easier. Saturday night was spent much like Friday, just sitting round the campfire. Going to bed, I wore leggings, my hippie breeks, my trackies, 3 t shirts, a jumper, a jacket and 2 pairs of socks, so I was a peerie bit warmer. It was still no particularly comfy cus we didna have pillows and all we had under wis was a thin camping mat. But we survived! This morning didna really involve much, just packing up all wir stuff and getting ready to go. Didna take long though so just sitting by the river writing this while we wait for wir run back to Noosa to get the Greyhound to wir first Helpx hosts in Bauple. Looking forward to that.
