On Monday night we arrived in Hervey Bay at about half five and decided that instead of getting the free shuttle bus to a hostel, we would walk and get some exercise. Bad idea. Despite the fact we had google map directions far the bus stop to the hostel, we got totally an utterly lost. Figured out later it was directions fae the wrong bus stop and we'd started aboot 2km fae whar we originally thout. What made the walk even harder was the fact we passed by the sea whar literally thousands of bats were flying overhead! The sky was black for aboot half a mile! Scary but quite cool too. At about 20 past 7 we found the group of hostels, only to discover all the staff in every one had gone hom at 7... Managed to get one o them on the phone though and spent a very fine night in a twin room, fur the price o a dorm cus there were no dorms left. So that was good.
The next day we checked into Palace Hostel for the first night o wir Fraser Island Trip. Spent the day just chilling around the hostel in the hammocks and things. Had to be up bright and early on Wednesday morning to be briefed and then head over to the island. Although we were on a tag along tour, meaning a lead vehicle and a couple of vehicles the folk on the tour could drive, you had to be 21 ta drive, so we wirna alood :( Started aff being brawlly crap weather, really windy and kinda cold, which meant stuff lik swimming in the lakes wis slightly less appealing, but we did it anyway. Geed ta a really nice lake, Lake Wabby, which was in the middle o what was pretty much a desert. There were massive sand dunes going right down to the water edge, so spent ages running doon them and inta the water. We had a massive group o folk cus the weather the day afore had been too bad fur dat group to go, so dir wis plenty o folk ta spik tae. At night time we camped just up aff da beach. Bout minute steaks cus da easiest wye ta cook wis barbecue, so we had steak sandwiches for tae, which was pretty amazing efter a energetic day. A Swedish boy haed a guitar and was impressively good so we sat up drinking goon and singing country songs, so dat wis brilliant!
The next day we geed for a walk along a peerie creek, which was sacred ta da folk that bade on Fraser, an so important, nobody is alood ta touch the water! Apparently dats made it one of the five cleanest fresh water places in the world! It wis completely clear. We swam later in a similar creek, which fairly washed away a lot o the hangovers! Geed ta see the shipwreck of the Maheno. Unfortunately it wis still no very good weather an crazy tides so we couldna win to Indian Head or the Champagne Pools up at the north end of the island, dat was a bit o a shame cus its meant to be one of the best bits. Another thing was that you couldna swim in the sea on Fraser. The rips were incredibly strong and the sea full o jellyfish and sharks apparently! I wisna willing to go and check though. Dat night was spent similarly, geed ta bed a lot earlier though cus we were absolutely knackered. Woke up in the morning, tidied the tents and went for breakfast only to find dat some of the cool boxes had been left oot overnight. Both me and Karis' cheese and butter wir missing and we were telt by the guides they'd been eaten by dingoes! Didna actually believe him until he showed wis the completely licked oot butter tub with teeth punctures in it! They managed to get into the cool box and through a zippy plastic bag and a box afore demolishing every last scrap! Kinda mental! We headed off fae camp for the last time over to Lake McKenzie. That was amazing. For the first time it was a beautiful day, so we swam in the lake and lay about on the beach all morning, which was a brilliant end to the trip. Made it back across on the barge and back to the hostel and had a very chilled night sitting around there. Two showers later and wir still finding sand all over the place though! On the night bus tonight to Airlie Beach for wir Whitsundays boat trip damoran so very excited aboot dat! Not so excited aboot da bus, but after Thai trains I'm sure we'll cope!
