We both turned off the alarm at 8.30 and slept till 10! Oopsies!!! We like sleep though!
Michael said he spoke to me in my sleep! He does this a lot and I can never remember! Scary! Haha he could find out all sorts! Then again he knows everything already!
Got ready and walked to get some breakfast! Got given the wrong meals but we didn't realise! Had hazelnut iced coffee! Never tasted anything as nice!
Got the local bus at 12 from outside the restaurant and it cost 2 ringgit (40p) for the 45 minute journey to Ayer Itam and we were visiting Kek Lok Temple, the biggest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and one of the biggest in SEAsia!
I'm not kidding you, it was huge with lots of shrines and pagodas linked by a million stairs! There is three different levels to it! To get to the first level you had to walk through loads of stalls on each side of the walkway. The temple looked very Chinese. It was built by the Chinese in 1885.
The first level had a small lake with the most turtles I had ever seen, about 200 all swimming happily around! It had Chinese saddle shaped eaves and represents the goddess of mercy. The second levels represent the laughing Buddha and has Thai arched windows. At the top is a golden Burmese stupa representing the historical buddha. We had to pay 4 ringgits (80p) each, each way to get an outdoor elevator to the top.
After we left, walking past all the beggars who clearly have nothing wrong with them, we went to 7 eleven to get a drink and ask the girl which bus to get to Penang Hill!
The bus cost 2 ringgits (40p) and took an hour! Arrived there and it cost 25 ringgits (£5) each to get to the top. The only way to the top is by verticle train.
The train WAS practically vertical, there were no seat belts (obviously, it's Asia) and people stood but things were falling out of there trouser pockets! Me and Michael got seats though.
The train took 15 minutes to get to the top of the mountain, it's 821 meters high and is covered in tropical forest.
As travellers you get used to seeing places that probably have wifi, saw a restaurant and it had free wifi so logged straight on, it strange how we get better wifi 821 meters up a mountain then in our guest house? Ha
The view from the top of the mountain was amazing! Could see the whole of George town.
At the top there was a bird and owl park but we didn't visit either, a few churches, one of them was closed and the other I had to cover my hair to get in so we didn't go in. The guy was nice about it though, spoke to him for awhile while Michael used the toilet! Everyone is so surprised how long we have travelled for and where we have been!
Got in the queue to get back on the train down and trampled all over kids to get the best seats at the front! It's like a roller coaster! You can't even see the track half the time because its full of vertical drops!
As we were at the front we got great photos! Looked over at Michael and someone was resting there camera on the top of his head to get a better view taking a video! He was not impressed and said he kept moving but nothing worked so he had to sit still! Strange.
Got a bus back to the Jetty. Some public buses here have wifi! Crazy! Everywhere has better wifi then our guest house! Mum skyped me, she had a surprise for me!!! If she ever scares me like that again I will return to the UK and she will know about it!
Got to the Jetty, walked to the ATM, bought a sandwich and got on another bus at around 5. We were undecided about going to the Botanical Gardens as its an hour away and will be dark soon but thought we should do it as we only have today here.
The bus to Botanical Gardens took 1 hour 15 minutes! Not bad for Asian time! The bus has air con though, this is our worst nightmare! I was freezing! Getting off the bus is always a relief and we run around to keep warm! I don't think buses can turn it off though. Even my bones were cold! Michael heart was cold but nothing is new there ;)
The gardens were beaut even if it was getting dark and it was free to get into! There is so many wild monkeys running around! I love watching them!
We only spent about 2 hours here and didnt nearly see everything but it was mosquito central after dark! We did visit the ponds, orchid garden, cactus house and the bridge though.
Had to wait an hour for a bus in the dark surrounded by monkeys ad forest monsters ready to pounce! Asked a guy if the bus was coming and he said was. He came back over to us after 45 minutes and offered us a lift but the bus has just turned he corner! How lovely is that!
It only took 30 minutes to get back as there was no traffic! Walked to China Red for some food, we wants to try those toast boxes but we won't have time now! Went to the Japanese stall and I got fried Maceral fish with rice, vegetables, salad and soup as a set for 13 ringgits (£2.60). Got about 2 litres I lemon juice as I ordered a large drink which cost me 5 ringgits (£1).
There was more travellers here tonight then last night, which only makes me hate them more.
Got back to Love Inn Hostel at about 11, we hate it here, doesn't feel safe and there is no sink? The woman who owns it seems nice but there is something about her I don't like. Couldn't sleep till 3.
