Woke up early ... Again! We are on holiday and yet waking up earlier than at home! After the canyoning, the nails were in tact but wrecked so I hastily booked in for a manicure to cut them all off before we left Wanaka leaving bob to empty the grey water from the van and have some brekkie on the lake front.
By midday we were all sorted and on the road to queenstown. The skydive was booked in for the afternoon and so far weather looked good so plan was to dump the campervan at the airport and check in to hotel before 3pm. After a hasty emptying of the van and saving all the yummy food we got taxi to queenstown
Our hotel is fab. Centrally located and dead comfy so we thought before the skydive we should book in our activities for next few days. Something to take our (well my) minds off the nerves that suddenly kicked in about jumping out a plane! Half hour later we had booked in all we wanted and were now at mercy of weather as to whether we could pull them all off!
Too soon it was time to check in for the jump. Again those pesky signing away your life forms found there way into our laps and this time there was the introduction of oxygen on plane as we had opted for highest jump of 15000ft or exofear as they so eloquently called it. Our bus was full of first time jumpers and rather quiet on short drive to airfield where we sat in the sun for 10 mins before we went through to kit up. Divers were whooshing in above us to land.
We kitted up and met our tandem buddies. Rob's was a tiny little guy and after the initial how to jump out a plane speech - shape like a banana and smile (v technical really) we were scooted very quickly over to the turbine plane where we all snuggled up with our tandem buddies and went into the sky. THe nerves were there but we were both calm. Suddenly it was time and we were ready to jump. The clear window was opened and Rob's photographer climbed out the plane and hung onto the side v James bondesq until rob jumped. It is weird seeing your man fall out a hole into the sky! Suddenly it was me and naturally the eyes shut and for a couple of seconds we just hung in the door I swear it was longer than he said. After the initial feeling of falling we v quickly hit terminal velocity of 200km/hr and balanced out. It felt like a wind tunnel and my mouth was dried out by wind and forming silly shapes! The freefall lasted about one minute and then the shoot went up. After a jerk I was no longer on my belly but literally sitting in the sky, still high but calm. My tandem dude spun us in circles and asked me " how do you like my office". The view was stunning and sky so blue and then the guides said to bob and me "we'll make you a little more comfy" and started to loosen the straps! Eek, luckily they only did it a little! Looking down I could see bob floating below me. I had a nice chat with my buddy whilst drifting down and finally it was time land. Legs up and we were on the ground. V smooth. I was so excited I hugged everyone and it took awhile to feel calm again.
V pleased with ourselves!
Back in queenstown the evening was sunny so we explored the town and settled on winnie's for a rather tasty pizza dinner where we snagged a balcony table in the sun before going home to rest our aching bones. fab day!
