We drove (well when I say we, I mean Anne did the majority today). Highlights of the day include emptying the s*** from our mega bus and the constant unwavering rain.
Leaving the rain forest landscape of Franz we headed into terrain much like the Lakes, but on a monster scale. I'm out a day, but some of the rivers on the way to Franz are worth mentioning as they looked like they were made of raspberry slush puppy without the ice (that's a convaluted way of saying electric blue).
Ended the day on a high in Wanaka, which is a lovely town where the lucky few come to be truly happy. Fairly confident it is utopia - watersports climbing canyoning in it's long hot summers and skiing on the doorstep in the winter (our vision was quickly shattered when we saw the eye watering house prices at a local estate agent).
After passing through the pearly gates we set up camp on the edge of the lake Wanaka in Glendu Bay. That night we tucked into some homemade spaghetti bolognese on the edge of the lake enjoying the impressive views across the lake to the of snow capped mountains in the distance, blissfully unaware of what was in store for us the next day.
