I remember I was lying in my hammock on the dock reading a rather slow-going book and wondering if I should give up and start rereading the third Game of Thrones or whether I should stick it out (I have since given up) when someone came up with the idea of a trip to the Cayes - this beautiful group of sandy islets. There were no dives that afternoon, so the boat was free. Our boat captain Ruggie said he'd get us there and soon people were running about asking people if they wanted to come. Beers and crisps were bought and a cool box acquired. Snorkels and fins were loaded and Ruggie turned up his reggae boat anthems so loud that I'm sure all the fishies in the ocean could hear it.
The weather was perfect. Pure blue skies and crystal clear waters. We saw a pod of dolphins race past us, on a hunt between the islands. I desperately wanted to swim with them again because the time before had been so insanely magical, but they were going too fast and were in no mood to play.
Arriving at the Cayes I couldn't put my camera down! Everything around me was just so beautiful! The water was gorgeous dappled blue, turning green over the kelp and darker over coral. Against the sandy islands scattered with palm trees the images were perfect. I felt like every photo I took deserved to be on a post card, and that had nothing to do with my photographic abilities!
I went snorkeling for what must have turned into about an hour. There were so many fish! All different shapes, sizes and colours. Some brave ones looking at me as I drifted by, some I scared back into nooks and crannies in the coral. One oddly triangular, spotty fish that I followed for 5 minutes or so looked really very ugly and ungainly, but it moved as gracefully as any of it's more attractive friends. Nothing underwater is awkward or out of place. Everything fits perfectly and looks beautiful for it. On our way back to the boat Caitlin pointed out a group of squid skooting along in their funny way. They are the coolest thing! They have these wobbly bits on their sides like the frills on my swimsuit when I was 5. They ripple as the squid moves. That's not the coolest part though! They change colour!! I chased them around for a while before remembering that I was meant to be heading back to the boat.
I got back onto the boat and lay there, soaking up all the beauty of the day. Sorkelling, sun, sea and heat. We had packed the boat perfectly earlier in the day. Getting out of the Caribbean sea having just been snorkeling, all I wanted was a cold beer and a handful of crisps. El dia perfecto.
