So a few weeks ago now my Mum came to stay! I hadn´t seen her in months and then all of a sudden there she was! Getting off a bus in Tela. It was a very strange experience for me really and it took a while to get used to her being here. It felt like I had these two unconnected worlds. My Honduran world here where I am a foreign teacher responsible for not only myself, but 20 ten-year-olds and then my life back home in England where I am a local school girl, going to the pub, walking the dog in the frost and eating dinner every night with my family. I felt like Having Mum come over my two worlds were merging. It was a really strange sensation. I am very much living as an adult here, and having my Mum here that I could lean on, ask advice to and be supported by reminded me that I am only 19! I forget sometimes.
Mum and I took a long weekend to Copan Ruinas. It gave me a holiday out of Tela and Mum some experience of inland Honduras. We visited the Mayan Ruins there which were incredible! Literally every time we turned a corner and a new giganic pyramid appeared I would have to catch my breath! And we were allowed all over them! There were very little barriers or "no walk" signs. The temples were built right next to a river, so on one side of the ruins there was a massive drop that gave Mum the heebie jeebies. It´s funny bacause it reminded me of all those castles I´ve trapsed around as a child looking down from these steep stone battlements but never being quite in awe of them. But when you consider that the Mayan Ruins were built like 3000 years ago and they managed to construct something so huge right on a river front it makes you wonder at the sheer intelligance it must have taken. The whole site was an architectural phenomenon.
The next day we went to a coffee plantation called Finca El Cisne (Swan Farm) It was magical. Being the the countryside was beautiful enough, but then with horseriding, coffee, great food and hot springs, it turned into the most gorgeous of days. The horse riding was brilliant. I haven´t ridden since I was 8 and got riding lessons for my christmas present, but that didn´t stop me or Mum from galloping over the Honduran "campo" all morning. In truth, I think it was more our wonderful horses than us. My horse Princessa and Mum´s Elio seemed in contant battle to be ahead. We´d be steadily trotting along side by side when I´d get a little further ahead and then Mum would speed up and then I´d get faster and then Mum again, and before we knew it we were galloping again! The horses were brilliant! Extremely intelligent and seemed to enjoy the ride as much as we did. They were so well trained! In Honduras people ride very differently. Instead of all those rules about how to hold the reins and how to position your legs, you just give a slight kick to go, hold the reins in one hand and pull to stear. So simple! I think I might take it up when I get home, but I´m afraid it won´t be so enjoyable.
After the ride we had a gorgeous lunch at the Finca. Delicious fresh food all sourced from the farm and lovely coffee to go with it. Carlos (our guide) even made a chocolate sauce from the cocoa pods we´d seen earlier in the day.
In the evening we went to the hot springs which were very well done. They´d harnessed the boiling hot water of a natural hot spring and cooled it down as it flowed through a series of pools down the side of a hill, getting cooler in each new pool. It was the perfect thing to do after the morning of riding. We stayed until it got dark and then headed back to the Finca for dinner and bed.
It was the perfect weekend and I shared it with the perect person: my Mummy. And to top it all off, it was Mother´s day. I´d totally win the award for The Best Mother´s Day Plan!
