We <3 Kiwi Experience! Started the ride with a bacon sarnie from Christchurch and got on the bus without a hangover (possibly the only time this happened??). On our first day we drove to Kaikora and were booked to whale watch but the sea was too rough and it was bloody cold so we werent too bummed to miss it. We did however see a seal in the sea, like a wild seal in the sea, 'mazin! Had a movie marathon in the hostel that night and ate supernoodles, true backpackers hehee.
Then we went to Nelson, didnt get up to much to be honest, apart from drinking...the beer tasting in the hotel bar started it, honest! Back on the bus to Westport where we did the "Buller adventure" Jet boating! We got all kitted out in waterproofs, hats and sunnies (??), "waterproof my arse" says anj who got soaked...no idea how she managed it i was fine :D. Jet boatin was really good, lots of 360 degree spins which eventually took their toll on anj who started gettin travel sick- again. It finished before any mess tho so its all good! Jet boat driver was a proper kiwi nutter but was absolutley hilarious "the word is legs so spread the word!" and "we got to go back quick so let's leave like a jewish foreskin", Ok may not be as funny from us but we werent half chuckling! That night we went to the supermarket and the offie and cooked a mahoosive meal of mash (like loads of it) half a bag of frozen veg EACH and chicken kievs, arent u proud mum(s)? Had a good night with yet more movies and 2 games of s***heads wit bus ppl, both of which anj lost (tehehee) she is officially a s***head!
Next day we went to Lake mahinapua, we declined on the optional dip but some of the boys from the bus did it, thier faces when they hit the water was PRICELESS!!! It was like 4degrees haaaa! And i think that night was the best night of our trip so far! The notorious poo pub with 84 year old landlord Les (NZs oldest publican!) was host to our "P" fancy dress party, Anj and I dressed as prisoners and did a rather good job of MAKING our trews out of a table cloth, staples and gaffa tape (im not even joking!) and accesorised with a ball and chain (dog lead and balloon) and glow in the dark (apparently) handcuffs. We drank lots and both ended the night soaked (from going in the sea at 2am...clever!) with bleeding feet (cos i tried to carry a hay bail home but they bloody huge!), anj with a sore hand from holding onto an electric fence, TWICE and with matching pink stains on our t-shirts from the snakebite! Discovered the most amazing shots called cowboys and cowgirls, u just wait till we get home and make sum 4 u! Not so good was the jager shots (our first ever) jager is HUGE over here so we couldnt say no really...
Started the next day with the hangover from hell (it lasted til 4pm!) I couldnt even touch my english brekkie at the bushmans centre let alone look around at dead possums and wierd roadkill like that. That night was a fairly quiet one, watched yet another film and had an early(ish) night in Frans Josef ready for our glacier walk the next day! What a picture that was- anj walking down the road in boardies and ski socks... ive always said she knows how to dress and she is under the impression she has started a new trend, im not going to correct her. The glacier was AMAZING, huge and icy, what more can i say? We went on an 8 hour hike through crevices and caves, got really wet and fairly cold. That night we went to the bar for the New Zealand V France match, with a cheap meal and lots of drinks, a bit of a late one but was a goodun.
Short drive to Wanaka for pre-drinks and a night out. I have lots of bruises from a pile on- i ended up on the bottom :( but then again i dont deserve sympathy- i was more than willing to pile on others. Anj, however, just laid in the gutter oblivious to any pile on. Drove to the last stop in the south island, Queenstown, party and adventure capital of the world, im pretty sure we can vouch for the party bit! Wanted a quiet night tonight as had an early start with skiing... however the bar at the hostel had karaoke so had to go and support some of the bus ppl. We bumped in to Alex who we met on our connections tour in OZ, again the drinks flowed and well.. we ended up on stage singing to aqua. Tonight we sampled our first 'teapot' mmm, basically a cocktail in a teapot that you have as shots, couldnt say no to that. Then sampled the famous (at least in Queenstown) ferg burger. Mahoosive! We shared one and still struggled with that.
SKIING! Snowed the previous night so quite lucky with the conditions on the slopes, managed to pick up the skiing malarky quite easily again, not the biggest of runs but still good fun, stayed mainly on the blue slopes, Anj sampled the odd black ones. Managed one immence fall over then the second one i somehow managed to cross my legs completely and anj just pointed and laughed, no help at all. Last night with ppl from kiwi bus, school party fancy dress, only 4 of us actually bothered though, got free drinks for it though so worth it. Security knicked our predrinkage though, still managed to be well on our way and leave Queenstown on a high.
Drove on to Christchurch with a bus of randomers and then flew upto Wellington. Only one night there, were now in Taupo for 3nights. Have looked into another days skiing but sadly the slopes are closed. Anj persuaded me into 'rock and ropes' tomorrow before i really knew what i was letting myself in for (true friend that!) if i had known that people claim it to be a more personal challenge than both bungy and skydive, it may have been a quieter day tomorrow.
We are loving New Zealand, having a really good time but missin everyone back home of course!
Lots of love, us two xxxxx
