The journey from 4000 Islands in Laos into Cambodia was eventful. We left at 9am and caught a boat to the mainland, we waited on the other side for an hour and a half with some other people, when asked what time the guy said 20 mins, then the phone range, 15 mins, then phone rang again 10 mins, we all started joking, 'maybe we can get it down to 5 mins'. Eventually the bus came, we all piled on, then after 15 minutes we had to get off and get in a mini bus, we had to cram in 12 people into a 11 seater mini bus. 4 adults onto 3 seats, so funny. It didnt take long to the border like that, only 20 minutes and we were there. After paying our dollars and getting our throats checked for tempature??? we could walk the 500 meters across no mans land to Cambodia, there we waited to get onto another bus to Kratie. The bus was broken, no air con, it was a sauna inside, not happy, then there were too many people for the seats on the bus, after some arguments and expressing my views on the whole situation with the driver and crew to no avail, we had to clamber on, sit on plastic stools in the aisle, not happy, not a great start to Cambodia. After 3 hours like that we eventually arrived at Kratie. We got off the bus, I felt sorry for all the people carrying onto Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, the bus temp was horrific. Once in Kratie we wandered down the road and found a cheap hotel. We stayed there for 2 nights, just to chill out from the previous days travelling and figure out where to head to next. We booked the bus to Kampong Thom as I wanted to check out the pre Angkorian ruins, called Sambor Prei Kuk. I was dreading travelling on another Camboidan bus and was hoping the 8 hour journey would be ok. Thankfully the next morning when we left at 7am, the bus was a dream, the air con worked and we all had nice comfy seats. Travelling on the local bus was great, tourists mixing with the locals, brilliant. We changed at Suong just before Kampong Cham. That was pretty easy and even better bus, alot newer. We travelled on this one for the next 3.5 hours onto Kampong Thom. We arrived and found the accommodation I looked up about and booked a room for $7 a night, nice modern room in hotel, £4.20 a night for both of us, well in budget!
