November 5th 2006 – San Remo and Phillip Island
Today the sun was back out again yay!! It’s so true what they say about the weather around Melbourne, you really do get all four seasons in a day / week! We travelled towards Phillip Island and stopped at the town of San Remo where the connecting bridge for Phllip Island is. The drive there alone gave us sights of beaches, fields and birds that you would never get at home! You can drive through a town and into absolute nothingness within minutes!
At San Remo they have a popular spot where they feed the pelicans daily at 11.30, we were there in plenty of time to get a good spot on the pier and the pelicans were already there in wait for brekkie at least an hour before they got fed! The pics I’ve uploaded just don’t do those birds justice – they are bloomin huge! When they flew in or stood tall they were bigger than me, I had no idea they were that big and there were all these fearless kiddies playing near them in the water too! As you can see from pics, there was quite a frenzy when the feeding commenced, it’s a local fish & chip shop that feeds them, then happily opens it doors to feed the tourists too! It was a sight Id never thought of seeing and I was happy to be at a safe distance from them, they just gulp down the fish whole! As well as the pelicans, local fishermen told us to watch out for Stingrays, we saw loads swimming under us on the pier and they were absolutely humungous, they spanned more than the length of me (you might not think that’s much but it is!) they cause problems for the fishermen as they get caught in all their lines.
Then we travelled across the San Remo bridge into Phillip Island. There are loads of tourist spots around the island and its easy to understand why every single hotel, caravan park and B&B was totally booked! We first went into ‘A Maze N Things’ which is a place full of optical illusions, it was so weird when you first went in , we all felt a bit sick! The rooms made you feel like you were defying gravity and nothing was right, water flowing up hill, snooker balls rolling upwards. The next section was full of puzzles and illusions, some of them were really clever, see the pic I’ve uploaded of my head on a plate mmmm, hungry? Then there was a massive maze but we didn’t get very far in that!
Next we went to Cowes beach (still on Phllip Island) You can see from the pics that it had lovely beaches and the sun was beaming! We had our Shark & Chips lunch sitting on the grass banks looking into the sea and beyond, still have to pinch myself I’m here!! There were lads jumping off the pier into the sea but no way was I getting close, they came out shivering bbrrrrrr!
Then we went to Nobbies Point which was a total contrast and on the other side of the Island. The wind was rough and you see from my pics of the sea how rough the waves were and it got pretty chilly for the first time all day. It was such an amazing sight to see though, again the pics cant do it justice. It just reminds you of how strong and dangerous the sea can be, bit different to the calm sea and beach on the other side of the Island! The far island had seals on it as well that we managed to spot through binoculars. Then we travelled along to where they feed the penguins but no sign, they only come up at certain times of day. We didn’t bother paying to see then cos it’s a bit of a rip off!
So altogether a great day with lots of sights including new ones of pelicans, stingrays, seals and weird optical illusions!
Hope you enjoy your fireworks back home, they don’t do anything here cos they have never heard of Guy Fawkes and I suppose why should they! All the ozzies care about at the min is the Melbourne Cup!
