Hey everyone!
Thanks everyone for ur emails over the last few days, i've been feeling really homesick so they've been much appreciated! So, ive been up to a few things since my last entry and will try to remember it all for you! Mostly Ive been with my friend Stephanie who followed me here from Melbourne and is staying till the end of Jan so she'll be here with me the whole time i'm in sydney which is pretty cool! The weather here has been so up and down from scorching sun to massive thunder storms and cold, like being at home!
Penny left last Thurs so we had a final farewell meal down at Circular Quay with a perfect view of the bridge we climbed together (miss u penny!). Then went out with people from the hostel. Its a dangerous habit to get into here and so easy too, the hostel is always giving out vouchers for free meals at pubs when u buy a drink or free drinks at places between certain times, sounds great but can get a bit much if u know what i mean!!
I went back to Olympic Park with a couple of girls ( i went there briefly as part of my blue mountains trip) we were going to do the tour but it was bit expensive so we just walked round the stadiums, the Olympic Park is huge and all the stadiums are so spread out! There were things going on there and got some good pics, dad n boys u would have loved it, they showed films too of what it was like in 2000 when the olympics were here. After that Marie was a bit homesick so we went to Ikea to cheer her up (she's from Sweden!) and its actually the first time ive ever been to an Ikea! Katie n Nikki i was thinking of u the whole time of course!
Me and a girl in my room, Marie, have got tickets to go and see a show at the Opera House on 28th Dec called 'Not New Years Eve', we got a special rate cos we're under 26, less than half price the normal tix, so really looking forward to that and getting a nice (but cheap) dress to wear too for it, probably only time I'll ever go so might as well make the most of it!
We had a couple of days of really good weather so me and Steph headed down to the Royal Botanic Gardens which are so beautiful and so huge, it would take days to see all of it properly! You'll see from my pics that I got a bit carried away taking pics of the plants, sorry! Also saw some huge scary-ass spiders eeewww! After that we headed to the famous Paddy's Market which has everything from budgies to food stalls! Steph bought lots but i resisted temptation and just got one top (keep seeing so many nice things to buy but no room in rucksack!) We walked back through Hyde Park and found a part I didnt know was there where the Anzac Memorial Building is and Lake of Remembrance so nipped in there too. There's a museum type place at the bottom of the building, was pretty sad reading some of it.
Sunday was a really lazy day, just sat down Hyde Park taking in the sunshine. Wandered round the shops too and bought myself a Harbour Bridge charm pendant for my bracelet back home as a memory of my bridge climb!
Me and Stef has got our tax file numbers and Oz bank accts now, so ready for work when (and if!) I want to now. Have to admit I'm not in any rush at all!! Our lazing session in Hyde Park got cut short as the blue sky quickly turned dark grey and thunder, lightening and rain cam down, we made it back to the hostel just in time, the storm was a big one and lasted for hours, bloomin freezin too!!
Yesterday me and Stef went to The Outback Centre at DArling Harbour where they do a free show with aboriginees playing didgeridoos and telling u all about the dreamtime era and about didgeridoos in general. The guy seemed quite strange at first but was really goo and learnt lots! Didgeridoo is an english name cos of the way it sounds when played but the aboriginees call it lots of names (peculiar type names I cant remember!) Also learnt that they are made when termite eat the nutritional centre of trees and thats why they are bigger up north cos the trees are more nutritous! They are excellent for breathing techniques during childbirth (this guys wife gave birth to her 1st child in 1hr!) so Carla, Emily and Nikki get urselves a didgeridoo and start practising!! They're also good for coping with asthma, getting a flat stomach (gimme one!) and also for getting high - the guy was in fits of giggles after he finished playing!! They play imitating the noises of animals etc and if u listen hard enough you can hear the players heartbeat through the rhythym, looks bloody hard to do though! And, if you ever need to escape a crocodile, the best thing to do is run / swim away from it in a zig-zag manner apparently, good luck with that!
Went inside St Mary's Cathedral (where apparently Nicole Kidman got married?) and luckily there were no weddings in progress this time! The Cathedra is beautiful and had some of the most gorgeous windows and statues Ive ever seen in churchy places. They do free tours on Sundays so reckon i will go and visit the crypt too!!
So today whether was a bit gloomy to begin with so we went to the Australian Museum which was really good! The first level had lots of skeletons and an aborginal part following the dreamtime era through to today. Next floor was full of minerals, crystals diamonds and the largest gold nugget ever found in Oz! Some really pretty opals too. Top level had loads of animals on display where you could touch and feel them (stuffed animals!) it was really good. And there was an exhibition on too with some really cool pics of animals (took a few snaps of my faves!) Then back to Hyde Park where we sat in the sun and relaxed (both fell asleep for a short while to be honest!) Such a hard life we've got out here!
So thats what Ive been up to the last few days! Me and Stef have visited the Info Centre lots and have made a list of things to do so we don't miss anything and we've still got lots of time to go! The hostel has put up some pretty lame decorations to make it christmassy but still doesnt feel anything like xmas, suppose thats a good thing really tho in case i get sad!!
Keep in touch everyone and have fun at any parties u go to for xmas, tell me all the goss!
Ang xx
