Leaving Hanoi at 8.30 we arrived at Lac village for a local lunch at 1, after a brief stop and the chance to play table tennis with the locals. After lunch we drove to our trek starting point and started to climb. We arrived in Hong Kia the village of our homestay just before dark. The homestay was basic but comfortable (mats surrounded by a fire) so after supper everyone headed to bed, mainly to try and combat the cold.
An early wake up, needing to use the lovely squat toilet was followed by breakfast. The trek was absolutely amazing, the scenery was surreal, getting a blister from walking down a large amount of steps couldnt dampen my spirits, neither could falling face down in front of 2 children! Arriving at our second homestay at 3 after 13 km trekking Iwas soon paddling in the river having given up on the fishing idea before heading back for a lovely supper, lots of beer hoi (50p for one and a half litres) before getting into bed. Sleeping on a bamboo floor with huge gaps in, looking onto a concrete floor 10 feet below was an experience not mentioning the cold especially as I had a 'bible' as a pillow!
