The end of another Tour de France. Good crack, good company, good food and some interesting and beautiful scenery (as well as lots of Tarmac). Jon made the interesting observation that DH & JPS have now cycled over 3000 miles over the past few years on these tours. Let's hope they will let us Brits back in again next year. Big thanks to Jon & Al for doing all the planning, booking and navigating on this trip and generally looking after me :-) Cheers D.
The sixth year of these French cycling trips done, wow how did time pass so quickly? This one was well up to the very high standard that the bar has been raised to. My primary aim when going on these trips is to keep up with that cycling monster (Alan), I just about managed it, having to work very hard to do so. We received the normal boost to our trip again, when Jon and David joined us in Bordeaux. All arrangements worked superbly, expertly organised by Jon and Alan. Body and bike survived, (don't tell Alan) Spain was better than France. AB.
Another tour complete and goals achieved. Well done all and have 2 weeks off now before training begins for next summer.
Andy is right about Spain. Better cycling and cheaper everything. May have to rethink routes for next time.
We have eaten well and sampled local feasts along the way. For one of us it is back to work. For the other 3 it is time to dust down the crown green bowls and launder the tartan blankets ready for the winter. Will the old folks make it through another winter to ride again. Watch this space. APL
And so I have the final say, though most that needs saying has been said, it HAS been as good as ever, no doubt. Congratulations to the A team for the humungous achievement of cycling 802 miles from northern Spain to Northern France, thank you for tolerating the B team and keeping us from hopping on the first train that came along! The B team have done ok too I feel, 522 miles from Bordeaux to San Malo, ... and boy it feels like it! Thank you to D for his company when the A team were dots on the horizon, and for being a splendid room mate once again.
In final summary I would say;
1. Flying worked well, and I would be happy to take this option again.
2. The hotels this year have been the best and most consistent we have had.
3. French baguette 'sandwiches' are as good as ever, and their baking is the finest in the world bar none.
4. Alan needs to buy some new tyres.
5. I promise to practice my map folding for 1 hour every day for the next 12 months.
There it is then for another year, thanks guys, and in the words of another of our ex Salford colleagues, 'you can't buy this'. JPS
